Mercedes has recently provided additional information on the AMG GLE 53 Hybrid, one of the two AMG performance versions of the refreshed GLE-Class SUV. Expected to arrive at U.S. dealerships in late 2025 as a 2026 model, the GLE 53 is a plug-in hybrid, similar to other recent AMG models. Its powertrain is centered around a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine that alone produces 443 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. This engine is complemented by an electric motor with a maximum output of 134 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, which is powered by a 31.2-kWh battery pack.
Combined, the GLE 53 has a total system output of 536 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60 mph in an estimated 4.6 seconds. It can achieve an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. These performance figures showcase the impressive capabilities of the GLE 53 Hybrid as a high-performance SUV.
Furthermore, Mercedes claims that the GLE 53 can reach a top speed of 87 mph in electric mode, although no specific range estimate has been provided. The vehicle is equipped with an 11-kW AC onboard charger and 60-kW DC fast-charging capability, ensuring efficient and convenient charging. With these charging capabilities, the GLE 53 is expected to have impressive charging times compared to other plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The GLE 53 also features updated air suspension with new passive stabilizers, rear dampers, and stop buffers in the front shocks. Changes have been made to the software as well, enhancing the vehicle’s overall performance and handling. In terms of braking, the GLE 53 is equipped with upgraded brakes compared to the standard GLE, with larger rotors and calipers for improved stopping power.
Available in standard SUV or Coupe body styles, the GLE 53 distinguishes itself from non-AMG models with a redesigned front fascia and exterior badging that signify its plug-in hybrid powertrain. Inside the vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system has been updated with new functions and graphics specifically related to the plug-in hybrid powertrain, providing a seamless and user-friendly experience.
Despite the impressive performance of the GLE 53, it is not the most powerful AMG GLE-Class model available. That title belongs to the GLE 63 S, which features a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine in combination with the same plug-in hybrid system as the GLE 53. This powertrain configuration enables the GLE 63 S to deliver a staggering 603 horsepower, making it the powerhouse of the GLE lineup.
Both the GLE 53 and GLE 63 S are derived from the updated GLE-Class, which is set to debut for the 2024 model year. The refreshed GLE-Class includes updated styling, the inclusion of Dolby Atmos technology for the available Burmester audio system, and a non-AMG plug-in hybrid variant. These updates help keep the current-generation GLE fresh and competitive in the SUV market.
As for pricing, Mercedes has not yet announced specific details for the 2026 AMG GLE 53. Pricing information is expected to be released closer to its U.S. launch in late 2025. With its combination of power, efficiency, and luxurious features, the GLE 53 Hybrid is sure to attract attention from performance and eco-conscious SUV buyers alike.
