Universal Audio has recently introduced its latest pedal, the UAFX Lion ’68 Super Lead. This pedal takes the amp-in-a-pedal concept to a whole new level by digitally recreating three iconic 100-watt Marshall Plexi setups from the 1960s. It includes the Super Lead, which is based on the classic tube amp, the Super Bass, inspired by the 1967 low-end icon, and the Brown, emulating the sound of a 100-watt Marshall Plexi with a Variac to recreate Eddie Van Halen’s legendary guitar tone.
While the pedal is a nod to vintage amps, it incorporates modern features and technology to enhance the overall user experience. One notable feature is the onboard impulse response (IR), which includes recreations of various classic microphones and speaker cabinets, allowing users to fine-tune their sound. Additionally, the UAFX Lion ’68 Super Lead offers built-in reverb, volume boost, presence control, and a range of assignable preset switches that can be customized using a smartphone app. For those who prefer ready-to-use settings, the pedal also comes with a collection of artist presets.
All the speaker models available in the UAFX Lion ’68 Super Lead are derived from Universal Audio’s OX Stomp pedal. At the time of launch, six speaker models are provided, with more expected to be added in the future. Updating the pedal is effortless, thanks to the USB-C port located on the back, in addition to mono/stereo jack connectors for seamless integration into any setup.
Interestingly, the UAFX Lion ’68 Super Lead also offers the option to bypass the cabinet and microphone emulations, allowing guitarists to rely solely on their actual amplifier. Universal Audio claims that these advanced features combine to deliver “the most authentic late ’60s British 100-watt tube sound ever placed into a stompbox.” However, this level of authenticity does come at a high-end price tag of $400.
Alongside the UAFX Lion ’68 Super Lead, Universal Audio has released several other pedals, including a tremolo pedal, a chorus/vibrato pedal, and a compressor pedal based on the classic Teletronix LA-2A. This is not the company’s first venture into amp recreations, as they have previously gained recognition for developing plugins based on classic amps. Recent releases include amp emulation pedals based on the Fender Deluxe Reverb, the Fender Tweed Deluxe, and the Vox AC30. Reviews of these pedals have praised their exceptional sound quality, despite their relatively steep price point.
Universal Audio’s commitment to delivering high-quality amp simulations has made them a leading player in the pedal market. The UAFX Lion ’68 Super Lead, along with the other recently released pedals, expands their lineup and provides guitarists with more options for achieving their desired tones. With the integration of modern technology and attention to detail in recreating vintage classics, Universal Audio continues to provide musicians with innovative tools to enhance their playing experience.
