Lexus made a splash at the 2023 SEMA show in Las Vegas by showcasing concept versions of their latest SUVs. The main attraction was the redesigned GX, which was unveiled for the 2024 model year. This concept version was specifically developed with overlanding in mind, highlighting the potential for adventure and active lifestyles that the vehicle offers. It featured a range of upgrades, some of which may be available through Lexus’ Associated Accessory Product (AAP) program in the future.
The concept SUV, named the GX 550 Overtrail+, is the most capable grade of the new GX. It comes equipped with standard features such as 18-inch wheels, 33-inch Toyo Open Country All-Terrain tires, and an aluminum skid plate. To further enhance its off-road capabilities, Lexus added rock rails, an on-board tire compressor, a roof rack with cargo cases, and rear window accessory panels on both sides. Additionally, there’s a ladder for easy access to the roof, fuel canisters, a shovel, and recovery boards. These additions not only make the GX 550 Overtrail+ more rugged and capable but also demonstrate its potential as a vehicle for off-road adventures.
Under the hood, all 2024 GX SUVs are equipped with the same twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that delivers an impressive 349 horsepower. This powerful engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system, complete with a 2-speed transfer case and Torsen limited-slip center differential. These features ensure that the GX can confidently handle any terrain and provide a smooth and controlled driving experience.
In addition to the GX, Lexus also presented a concept version of the 2022 LX 600 at the SEMA show. This SUV was designed with surfing or lake trips in mind, showcasing its versatility and adaptability to various outdoor activities. The roof rack of the LX 600 is equipped to carry a stand-up paddleboard, making it perfect for water sports enthusiasts. To provide some shade and protection from the sun, there’s also an awning. The concept SUV came with useful accessories like a camp kitchen bundle, allowing users to prepare meals conveniently while enjoying their outdoor adventures.
Lexus emphasized that these concepts represent their vision for what’s possible with the GX and LX SUVs. While there are currently no plans to offer the specific accessories shown on the concepts, most of them can already be purchased in the aftermarket. This suggests that Lexus is keen to cater to the active lifestyle preferences of their customers by offering a wide range of accessories and customization options.
In addition to these concept SUVs, Lexus displayed custom GX SUVs representing previous generations of the nameplate. Some of these customizations were prepared by Lexus customers, showcasing the individuality and personalization possibilities that Lexus SUVs offer.
In summary, Lexus used the 2023 SEMA show to demonstrate the active lifestyle potential of their latest SUVs. The concept versions of the redesigned GX and the 2022 LX 600 highlighted the versatility, capability, and customization options available to customers. These concepts showcased various upgrades and accessories designed for off-road adventures, surfing, and other outdoor activities. While not all the shown accessories will be offered directly by Lexus, they can be obtained through the aftermarket. This reaffirms Lexus’ commitment to providing their customers with vehicles that are not only luxurious and stylish but also cater to their specific interests and activities.
