Sony has announced that its PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles will soon be removing their X (formerly Twitter) integrations. This means that after November 13, users will no longer be able to post clips or screenshots directly to X from either system.
According to a notice shared by Sony on its consoles, users will lose the ability to “post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so).” The notice was added to Sony’s website on Monday.
Sony has not provided specific details as to why they are discontinuing X integration on their consoles. However, it is possible that this decision is related to X shutting down its free API earlier this year. This move forced developers and companies to pay if they wanted to connect to X’s services. Microsoft made a similar decision in April when they stopped allowing users to directly post Xbox clips to X.
While direct integration with X will no longer be available, there are still options for users to share their PlayStation clips. For PS5 owners, they can access their recent captures through the PS App and share them to X from their phone. On the other hand, PS4 owners (and PS5 users who prefer this approach) will need to use a USB drive to transfer screenshots and clips to their computer. Alternatively, users can utilize other direct sharing options available on both PS4 and PS5, such as YouTube.
Overall, this change by Sony reflects the evolving landscape of social media integrations and the need for companies to adapt to shifting business models. By removing X integration, Sony is likely making adjustments to their platform’s features and focusing on other sharing options available to their users. While some may lament the loss of direct X integration, there are still avenues for PlayStation gamers to showcase their gameplay moments and engage with the gaming community.
