Toyota has officially announced that it will be introducing the Crown SUV to the U.S. market, marking another expansion of the popular Crown nameplate. Scheduled for debut on November 14th, ahead of the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show, the SUV is highly anticipated and will join the existing Crown sedan in Toyota’s lineup. The decision to introduce the Crown SUV to the U.S. market was hinted at earlier when Toyota released a teaser for a hybrid midsize SUV that bore resemblance to the Crown Estate concept. Now, Toyota has confirmed that the SUV will indeed be named Crown.
The 2023 Crown sedan was first launched in the U.S. last year as a replacement for the Avalon, and the addition of the Crown SUV signals the return of the Crown name to American soil for the first time since 1972. However, the SUV is just one of four distinctive body styles that Toyota has planned under the Crown nameplate. Joining the sedan and the SUV will be the rakish Crown Sport crossover, along with a more traditional-looking SUV and a low-slung sedan set to be released in the near future.
The traditional SUV, as previewed by the Crown Estate concept, closely resembles the body style teased for the U.S. market. The teaser showcased a taillight design similar to that of the concept, hinting at an elegant and modern design for the upcoming Crown SUV.
When it comes to powertrains, the Crown SUV is expected to share options with the U.S.-market Crown sedan. The sedan is currently offered with two hybrid all-wheel drive options, both with an electric motor that powers the rear wheels. The standard powertrain utilizes a 2.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine, while an optional version boasts a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4. The outputs for these powertrains are 236 horsepower and 340 horsepower, respectively.
Rumors have also circulated about the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain to the Crown sedan, which could potentially make its way into the SUV. The Japanese-market Crown Sport has already debuted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, utilizing a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, although performance figures for this variant have not yet been released by Toyota.
Since the release of the Crown SUV was confirmed, automotive enthusiasts and consumers alike have been eagerly awaiting the launch. Toyota is known for its reliable, efficient, and stylish vehicles, and the addition of the Crown SUV to the U.S. lineup is expected to shake up the midsize SUV segment. With its sleek design, hybrid powertrain options, and the legacy of the Crown nameplate, the Crown SUV is poised to make a significant impact in the market upon its much-anticipated debut.
