Samsung Research has developed Gauss, named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, to power several on-device AI technologies across Samsung products. This includes Gauss Language, which handles tasks like translations and summarizing documents, Gauss Code, a coding assistant, and Samsung Gauss Image for image generation, including the ability to create images based on prompts, and upscale low-resolution images.
The development of Gauss is historically grounded in the work of the human Gauss in the 1800s, who formed the normal distribution theory, a major component in the growth of machine learning and AI. Essentially, Gauss would have been equally thrilled by a generated picture of a cat writing at a desk.
While some may be cynical about Samsung’s generative AI personal assistant, the company’s innovations usually forge their own path. Case in point, Samsung had developed its own voice assistant, Bixby, which is accurately summed up here. Despite some skepticism, running generative AI features on-device could give Samsung an advantage over existing generative AI models that currently require cloud connectivity. This gives Samsung an edge in the market by providing a more convenient, faster, and privacy-protected user experience.
Samsung is already showcasing Galaxy AI in its incoming translation feature, as the company continues to push the boundaries of AI capabilities in its products and services. Furthermore, Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset supports on-device GAI operations, which will likely be integrated into the future Galaxy S24 phones.
In other tech news, Amazon Prime subscribers now have access to discounted One Medical memberships that offer numerous primary care services, giving Prime members a new perk to take advantage of. Additionally, according to a Blizzard spokesperson, the Overwatch League (OWL) may be transitioning to a new format, marking a significant change for the professional Overwatch scene.
Shifting focus to hardware, HP’s Spectre Fold represents a true leap forward for next-generation hybrid design, offering a flexible-screen laptop that is thinner, lighter, and more polished than previous models. However, the high price tag may deter potential buyers, despite its cutting-edge design and capabilities.
As the technology landscape continues to evolve, companies like Samsung and HP are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, showcasing innovative AI features, and hardware design. The integration of AI into everyday products will give users new experiences and conveniences, determining the future of technology in our lives.
