US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers has issued a ruling that major social media companies must face lawsuits alleging that they are responsible for contributing to and exacerbating teenagers’ social media addiction. The ruling has serious implications for some of the most influential companies in the tech industry, such as Meta, which operates Facebook and Instagram, Google, the owner of YouTube, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, and Snap. In another significant legal action, 41 states along with the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against Meta, accusing the company of being aware that its “addictive” features were harmful to children and teenagers. The tide turned against companies like Meta after a former employee, Frances Haugen, revealed internal Facebook research that found Instagram to be “harmful for a sizable percentage of teens.”
In response to the ruling, Google and TikTok defended their platforms, emphasizing their efforts to protect children and families. A Google spokesperson conveyed the company’s commitment to building age-appropriate experiences for kids and families on YouTube, as well as providing robust parental controls. The spokesperson refuted the allegations in the complaints, asserting that they are simply untrue. Similarly, a spokesperson for TikTok reiterated the app’s robust safety policies and parental controls, dismissing the claims against the platform.
