Kia recently unveiled its updated 2024 Sorento model at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show. The three-row mid-size SUV has received a fresh new look, drawing inspiration from the larger Kia Telluride. In addition to the updated appearance, the 2024 Sorento will be available in a rugged X-Pro variant for the first time.
Although sales for the updated Sorento are set to start in the first quarter of 2024, only gas powertrains will be initially available. However, the current Sorento will still be offered in hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, with the updated Sorento electified powertrains expected to arrive later in 2024. The HEV and PHEV models will be released as 2025 models.
The gas powertrains for the 2024 Sorento remain unchanged from the previous model. The base model comes equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine with a rating of 191 horsepower, while an available 2.5-liter turbo-4 engine boasts a rating of 281 horsepower. The naturally aspirated engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the turbocharged engine includes an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Most models come with standard front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is an available option.
One of the most notable features of the updated Sorento is the introduction of the new X-Pro variant. Designed for light off-roading, the X-Pro comes with 17-inch wheels and BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires, unique front and rear fascias, and distinctive interior touches, including open-pore wood trim. Additionally, the X-Pro features the turbocharged engine and an increased towing capacity, with Kia quoting up to 4,000 pounds. The X-Pro also includes a center-locking differential for its all-wheel-drive system. A less intense X-Line variant offers similar features but comes with 20-inch wheels and standard tires.
The interior of the updated Sorento has also undergone a significant revamp. A digital gauge cluster (4.3 inches standard and 12.3 inches available) and infotainment screen (12.3 inches) are now housed on the dash. Across all models, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are 10 electronic driver-assist features, including forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and support for intersections. Additionally, a highway-assist feature is available, providing control of the vehicle in a single marked lane and supporting automatic lane changes when necessary.
Pricing information for the 2024 Sorento will be revealed closer to its market launch next year.
The updated Sorento is also expected to include alterations to its electrified powertrains, aligning with the changes in the overall powertrain lineup. The current Sorento HEV boasts 227 horsepower, while the PHEV model has 261 horsepower. Both are powered by a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine as part of their electrified powertrains.
Overall, the 2024 Sorento offers an array of new features and improvements, including enhanced exterior styling, a new X-Pro variant, and updated technology throughout the interior. With the upcoming launch, Kia is set to offer a versatile and modern SUV that will appeal to a wide range of consumers.
