In an effort to combat bullying and harassment in the popular video game, Fortnite, Epic has introduced a new tool that allows players to document toxic behavior through voice reporting. This feature will continuously record voice chats in 5-minute segments for players to submit as evidence when reporting harmful online behavior.
For players under the age of 18, the voice reporting feature will automatically be turned on to ensure their safety and well-being while playing the game. However, for players over 18, they will have more control over how voice reporting is applied. In the game’s main settings, they will have the option to set it as “Always On,” applying to every channel they are in, or “Off When Possible,” which would disable it in Party Channels with friends as long as everyone’s preferences match.
To address privacy concerns, Epic has assured players that the audio clips will not be kept for long and will only be stored locally on the user’s device unless submitted as evidence. Additionally, each new recording will override the previous one, meaning only the immediate last five minutes of audio is reportable.
Under normal circumstances, audio clips will be auto-deleted either after 14 days or once action has been taken. If the accused player appeals the decision within that time, it may be extended for another 14 days. However, Epic has also mentioned that they will hold onto an audio clip for as long as necessary if legally required to do so.
The implementation of voice reporting in Fortnite reflects a growing trend in the gaming industry to address toxic behavior in online environments. Similar actions have been taken by companies like Activision, Microsoft, Sony, and others, demonstrating a collective effort to clamp down on harmful online behavior. Earlier this year, Xbox introduced a system for submitting 60-second audio clips alongside reports of abuse in voice chats, indicating a growing awareness and commitment to creating safe and inclusive gaming communities.
By introducing voice reporting, Epic aims to create a safer and more enjoyable gaming experience for all Fortnite players. The tool provides players with a means to document and report toxic behavior, fostering a more positive and welcoming online environment. This proactive approach not only serves to protect players from harassment and bullying, but also reinforces the values of respect and inclusivity within the gaming community.
The introduction of voice reporting in Fortnite has been well-received by many players, who see it as a positive step towards combatting toxic behavior in the game. It demonstrates Epic’s commitment to addressing the issues of online harassment and bullying, and sets a precedent for other gaming companies to follow suit.
Moving forward, it is important for gaming companies to continue implementing measures that promote a safe and respectful online experience for all players. By taking proactive steps to address toxic behavior, the gaming industry can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for players of all ages. Ultimately, this will contribute to a more positive and enjoyable gaming experience for everyone involved.
