When I first decided to try out the Orca jet ski, I expected it to be a smooth and exhilarating ride. However, when I actually launched myself off the thing, I found it to be a bit more challenging than I had anticipated. The Orca performed excellently when maneuvering around sharp corners, and as long as I maintained a solid grip on the handle, I was able to stay on. Despite my best efforts, there was one instance where I did fall off, but it took a series of sharp turns and sudden movements to dislodge me from the jet ski.
Unlike some other jet skis which are designed to spin around in a circle after a rider falls off, the Orca does not have such a feature. If you do happen to fall off, the throttle will stop, and you will need to swim to catch up with it. While there is no ladder to climb back up, the low flooring of the jet ski makes getting back on relatively manageable.
In addition to its instant power and silence, the electric motor of the Orca boasts of environmental benefits that Taiga is eager to advertise. Unlike traditional fuel-powered engines, the Orca motor does not use fuel or oil, eliminating the risk of gunk leaking into waterways. Moreover, the motor does not need to be winterized, a common issue with gas-powered boat maintenance. The Orca motor pulls water through a separate channel to power the device, reducing the risk of the interior parts freezing in cold temperatures.
The forward-thinking technology and eco-friendly design of the Orca does come at a price. The Orca Performance model is priced at $19,490, while the limited edition carbon-fiber model starts at a higher price of $26,500. In the works is a less expensive model – the 90-hp Orca Sport, priced at $17,490, but it is not yet available for purchase.
While these prices might seem steep, they are in line with prices from Taiga’s competitors. Gas-powered watercraft from well-known brands such as Kawasaki, Sea Doo, and Yamaha can range from $5,000 to $20,000. Luxury models can go even higher, with some reaching prices as high as $900,000.
Considering its price, the Orca is undeniably a top-notch personal watercraft. It’s challenging to have a bad time on a jet ski, particularly on a sleek and thrilling model like Taiga’s Orca. From a personal standpoint, I hope that the Orca does well enough in the market that the company can expand and potentially lower the price. However, for anyone with a penchant for high-speed water-based adventures and the means to afford it, the Orca appears to be the ideal choice – not only for the enjoyment of the rider but also for the benefit of the environment.
