Idris Elba has recently made headlines with his latest project, the survival thriller “Above the Below,” which he is set to star in and direct for Lionsgate. The movie, currently in production at Pinewood Studios, will also feature Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin in leading roles, with Martin Owen co-directing alongside Elba.
The plot of “Above the Below” revolves around a trio of astronauts who must navigate a chaotic and destructive re-entry to Earth, only to find themselves completely isolated and off course. As their capsule begins to sink into the unknown depths of the ocean, their battle for survival becomes increasingly tense and gripping.
Elba takes on the role of Jackson, the mission commander, while FitzGerald portrays Brooks, the determined co-pilot, and Fiennes Tiffin plays Rhodes, an idealistic astronaut on his first mission. The script for the film was developed by Future Artists Entertainment, with an original idea by Martin Owen and written by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent.

The film is being produced by Williams and Gina Carter, with Pascal Degove, former Managing Director of Goldcrest Films, serving as executive producer. Helen Lee Kim, president of global sales at Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, also expressed her enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing the magnetic performances of Elba, FitzGerald, and Fiennes Tiffin.
The project marks Elba’s second foray into directing, following his debut directorial feature, “Yardie.” Known for his roles in “Thor,” “Luther,” and “The Suicide Squad,” Elba has established himself as a versatile and dynamic actor.
