SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture of Comcast and Paramount Global, has recently revealed a teaser trailer for its upcoming original crime drama series, Codename: Annika. The teaser was unveiled at the Stockholm International Film Festival outdoor cinema, Sommarbio.
The Finnish-Swedish production, originally titled “ID,” was part of a deal that SkyShowtime struck earlier this year with Warner Bros. Discovery for exclusive rights to 21 HBO Max European originals across all of Europe. Codename: Annika is set to launch on SkyShowtime in September.
The series, created by Mia Ylönen and Aleksi Bardy of production company Helsinki-Filmi, takes audiences behind the scenes of the world of high-class art fraud, while also exploring the reality of navigating a double identity. Directed by Finnish director AJ Annila, the show promises to deliver an intriguing and unique viewing experience.
Codename: Annika stars Sannah Nedergård as Finnish art fraud investigator Emma/Annika, along with an impressive ensemble cast including Ardalan Esmaili, Eva Melander, Helena Bergström, Pekka Strang, Clarisse Lhoni-Botte, and Charles Martins. This series marks Nedergård’s first major role in a TV series, and SkyShowtime is confident that viewers will be hooked by her performance.
Monty Sarhan, CEO of SkyShowtime, expressed excitement about introducing Codename: Annika to subscribers, stating that it will be the streaming service’s first Swedish-Finnish original series and a fantastic twist on the Nordic Noir genre. He also praised the talent of Sannah Nedergård and emphasized the passion that went into creating the show.
Sannah Nedergård, the lead actress, spoke about the intensity and fun she experienced while shooting the series. She expressed gratitude towards the entire team for their expertise and dedication, stating that Codename: Annika was a show made with passion.
Mia Ylönen, one of the creators, revealed that they conducted interviews with an ex-undercover officer and fraud experts to ensure the story is rooted in the real world of exposed identities and art fraud. They added a main character, Emma, who is completely oblivious to her dark side. Emma dives head-first into undercover work and becomes entangled in a web of mysteries and secrets.
The plot of Codename: Annika follows Finnish detective Emma Haka, who is still in the midst of her undercover training. She is sent on a mission into Stockholm’s corrupt world of fine art trade. Assuming the alias of Annika Stormare, Emma aims to get closer to gallerist Rasmus Ståhlgren, a suspect in a case against the untouchable money launderer, Blanko. As the investigation progresses, the lines between Emma and Annika blur, ultimately leading Emma to make choices that may change her life and the lives of her loved ones forever.
SkyShowtime is available in 22 markets through various platforms such as Apple iOS, Android devices, Google Chromecast, and smart TVs. The streaming service costs €6.99 ($7.63) per month, offering a wide range of content for European subscribers.
Viewers can catch a glimpse of the intriguing world of Codename: Annika through the teaser trailer provided by SkyShowtime. With its unique storyline and talented cast, this forthcoming crime drama series has the potential to captivate audiences across Europe when it premieres in September.
