The British Academy has announced Sara Putt as its newly-elected chair, succeeding Krishnendu Majumdar. Putt, who is well-known in the film and TV industry as the founder of Sara Putt Associates, a talent agency specializing in behind-the-camera talent, has been involved with BAFTA for over a decade. In addition to her work with BAFTA, she also sits on the advisory board of the British Film Commission and The Film & TV Charity board. Previously, she served on the board of Women in Film and TV.
Putt expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead BAFTA and acknowledged Majumdar’s contributions during his tenure. She commended his leadership in overseeing the groundbreaking 2020 review, which resulted in significant changes within BAFTA. She emphasized her intention to listen to the membership, stakeholders, and beneficiaries of BAFTA and to use her experience as an agent to positively impact the careers of those supported by the organization.
Similar to Majumdar, Putt will serve as chair for a period of three years. The appointment of a deputy chair will be made in the near future to support her in her new role. Majumdar, in his final message to BAFTA members, highlighted the achievements made during his time as chair. These include the reopening of BAFTA’s London headquarters after redevelopment, the expansion of the membership base, the establishment of BAFTA North America, and the appointment of Jane Millichip as the new CEO, the first in almost 25 years.
Majumdar also expressed immense pride in the extensive review conducted in 2020, which was prompted by the criticism of the film nominations for their lack of diversity. The review led to numerous changes in BAFTA’s awards campaigning, voting processes, and membership guidelines. He described this as a cultural shift for BAFTA, marking a transition from being passive to proactive and progressive in addressing inequality. The review’s recommendations were embraced and are starting to have a positive impact on the industry, promoting diversity and leveling the playing field for all talents and stories.
Under Putt’s leadership, BAFTA will continue its commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity within the industry. With her vast experience and connections in the film and TV sector, she is poised to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As the chair, she will lead BAFTA in its mission to recognize and celebrate excellence in film, television, and games, while ensuring that all talents have equal opportunities to succeed.
In conclusion, Sara Putt’s appointment as the new chair of BAFTA marks an exciting transition for the organization. Her extensive experience, passion for the industry, and commitment to diversity make her the ideal candidate to lead BAFTA into the future. The industry can expect continued efforts from BAFTA to promote inclusivity and recognize the achievements of all talents, ensuring that the film and TV landscape becomes increasingly representative and diverse.
