The Blues Brothers, the iconic musical comedy duo consisting of Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, have recently announced their withdrawal from two upcoming fundraisers they were scheduled to headline. This decision was made due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which has placed certain restrictions on their performances. The events in question were Oceana’s Rock Under the Stars on August 12th and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s “A Million Reasons” Celebration on August 13th.
In a statement, Dan Aykroyd expressed his disappointment at having to cancel these performances, stating, “Jim Belushi and I are heartsick at having to withdraw from performing as the Blues Brothers for the Oceana and Los Angeles Regional Food Bank charities.” He went on to explain that the SAG-AFTRA restrictions clearly prohibit the presentation of characters from TV and films at concerts and conventions. Despite their desire to support these worthy causes, they felt obligated to stand in solidarity with the union membership by complying with these restrictions.
The Blues Brothers first came to prominence as a Saturday Night Live skit in 1978 before transitioning into a successful film directed by John Landis in 1980. According to SAG’s strike guidelines, the union’s 160,000 affected members are currently prohibited from participating in all principal on-camera work and engaging in promotional activities such as conventions, premieres, interviews, festivals, FYC events, award shows, and podcasts. While charity events have largely remained unaffected by the strike, The Blues Brothers found themselves in a unique situation where their appearance would involve portraying their beloved characters rather than appearing as themselves.
To ensure that these events still have a headline act, it has been announced that Gladys Knight will step in as a replacement for The Blues Brothers. Knight, an iconic and highly respected singer, has been enlisted to perform at both the Oceana event and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank event. This comes ahead of her highly anticipated Hollywood Bowl show on August 15th.
In addition to Gladys Knight’s performance, the Oceana event is expected to attract a star-studded crowd. Confirmed attendees include well-known actors such as Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Mary Steenburgen, and Sam Waterston. The Food Bank event is set to feature celebrity sous chefs for the cause, with Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Sam Waterston, Jeff Goldblum, and Dylan McDermott all lending their culinary skills to support the event.
While it may be disappointing for fans of The Blues Brothers to miss out on seeing their favorite duo perform at these fundraisers, it is important to recognize the significance of the SAG-AFTRA strike and the reasons behind their withdrawal. The strike represents a fight for fair treatment and improved conditions for the union’s members, who play a crucial role in the entertainment industry.
As the strike continues, it remains to be seen how it will impact future events and the industry as a whole. For now, the focus remains on supporting the union’s cause and finding suitable alternatives, such as Gladys Knight, to ensure that these fundraisers can still successfully raise much-needed funds and awareness for their respective charities.
