Amazon’s Prime Video has announced a new addition to the expanding “Bosch”-iverse with a series order for a spinoff centered around Renée Ballard, an LAPD detective who is a prominent character in several novels by author Michael Connelly. This news comes on the heels of the conclusion of the second season of “Bosch: Legacy” on Freevee.
The untitled series will be helmed by showrunners and executive producers Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood, known for their work on shows like “The Closer” and “Your Honor.” Connelly and Fabel Entertainment’s Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate, who served as executive producers on both “Bosch” and “Bosch: Legacy,” will also be involved in this new project.
Connelly expressed his excitement about bringing Renée Ballard to the screen, stating, “This show will have the same authenticity and propulsive momentum of Bosch: Legacy. Fans of the books will love it.” This new series is one of two extensions of the “Bosch” franchise that Amazon MGM Studios put into development. The other project, which focuses on Jamie Hector’s Detective Jerry Edgar, is still in development.
The new series will follow Renée Ballard as she takes on the task of running the LAPD’s new cold case division – a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. She approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination, ultimately uncovering a larger conspiracy during her investigations. Notably, she will lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver), to navigate the dangers that threaten her unit and her life.
Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals, unscripted, and targeted programming at Amazon MGM Studios, commended Connelly’s ability to create authentic and suspenseful stories with distinctive characters that resonate with audiences. She expressed excitement about expanding the Bosch universe with Renée Ballard’s character, who “instantly captivated readers with hints of a troubled past and a protective layer of idiosyncrasies she developed to survive.”
Henrik Bastin also expressed confidence in the new series, stating, “Alaimo and Sherwood have done an incredible job bringing Renée to life and creating a show that feels contemporary and fresh while honoring the Michael Connelly Universe. As the producers of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, we are sure fans will love this new installment in the franchise.”
The Renée Ballard series marks another step in the continued success and growth of the “Bosch”-iverse on Prime Video. With a dedicated fan base and the backing of experienced showrunners and executive producers, the upcoming spinoff is poised to be a compelling addition to the crime drama franchise, bringing Connelly’s intricate storytelling and beloved characters to the screen in a unique and captivating way.
