Bruce Lee, the legendary martial arts superstar, has been immortalized on the blockchain through the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The NFTs were available in a 36-hour open edition drop from April 12 to April 14, allowing fans of the actor to mint his virtual collectibles. Named “House of Lee: Genesis,” these NFTs were available thanks to a partnership between The Bruce Lee Estate and Pplpleasr’s Shibuya video platform.
The announcement of Bruce Lee’s NFTs was made in a post from the official Bruce Lee Twitter account featuring a video clip of the iconic Kung Fu star. The clip is particularly nostalgic as it showcases the action star’s transformation into an anime character, reminding viewers of the stellar performances that defined his movies.
The NFTs were designed and hand-drawn by Emily “pplpleasr” Yang in collaboration with Shannon Lee, founder and president of the Bruce Lee Estate and daughter of the late martial artist. Featuring artwork of the legendary actor, collectors can consider these NFTs as a ticket “to the House of Lee.” Although minted on the Ethereum network, the exact utility of these collectibles is yet to be revealed.
During the 36-hour drop, a total of 48,691 NFTs arrived on the blockchain via the Manifold platform, each costing collectors just 0.008 ETH, around $15 at the time. The release of the NFTs marks the beginning of what promises to be a long-lasting collaboration between Shibuya and the Bruce Lee Estate. Shibuya has previously focused on creating video content that is directed by NFT holders of the associated project. Recently, it launched an animated series on the White Rabbit, however, it remains to be seen whether they will follow the same approach with the Bruce Lee NFTs.
The use of NFTs has exploded in popularity in recent years, with celebrities and musicians alike joining the trend. Decentralized marketplaces like OpenSea, Foundation and SuperRare have become popular platforms for buying and selling digital art for millions of dollars. While still in its infancy, the NFT market is poised to grow exponentially.
The Bruce Lee NFTs are just one example of how blockchain technology is being used to make the world of art and collectibles more accessible to a global audience. With the digitization of art, collectibles and other assets, blockchain technology can provide greater transparency, security and traceability. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we think about ownership and authenticity.
As the NFT market grows, we can expect to see more iconic figures being immortalized on the blockchain. The use of NFTs not only preserves the legacy of these figures but also provides a new way for fans to engage with their favorite artists, actors and musicians.
