Recently, AST SpaceMobile conducted a series of tests in Hawaii, where their engineers witnessed impressive download speeds of up to 10Mbps from their BlueWalker 3 satellite to unmodified phones on the ground. Now, AST SpaceMobile is aiming to connect a phone to BlueWalker 3 over a 5G signal as their next objective. The prototype satellite was launched into low-Earth orbit by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket in September. With a size of 693 square feet, BlueWalker 3 boasts the largest antenna among current commercial satellites. However, its size and interference concerns have posed challenges for astronomers who fear its impact on their observations of the universe.
AT&T is among several US carriers exploring the use of satellites to provide internet service to rural communities with limited connectivity options. In 2021, Verizon partnered with Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellite network for wireless access.
