During an interview with China’s Global Times, Brazil’s Chief Advisor on foreign policy, Celso Amorim, highlighted the growing relationship between Brazil and China, stressing that the two countries “are coming closer together”. He also discussed the importance of de-dollarisation, stating that “I think it’s very important that we are free from the dominance of one single currency because sometimes it is used politically”. Amorim stated that both Brazil and China agreed to conduct their trade in their respective currencies, rather than using the US dollar. In addition, the two countries are reportedly working with BRICS countries, Russia, India, and South Africa, to create a new form of currency that will further shift them away from dollar reliance. Commentators suggest that the dominance of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency is at risk of being weakened due to the alleged government weaponising of it. The Brazilian President’s adviser has called for a multipolar world of less centralised power and no hegemony.
