When Marvel Studios first announced their foray into television with Disney+, fans were excited at the prospect of delving deeper into the beloved characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For Cobie Smulders, who plays Maria Hill, the former SHIELD agent, in the MCU, this meant an opportunity to explore her character in more depth. However, fans were in for a shock when Hill met her untimely demise in the series premiere of Secret Invasion, titled “Resurrection.”
Despite her character’s death, Smulders remains grateful for the incredible run she’s had in the MCU. Since her casting in The Avengers in 2011, Smulders has appeared in six more movies and three series. She even has a seventh movie appearance slated for November’s The Marvels. Reflecting on her time in the MCU, Smulders says, “On paper, the credits are great, but every production I’ve done has been an absolute blast with amazing people. So I really don’t have anything to complain about.”
What made Hill’s death even more surprising was the fact that Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Nick Fury, was the one who had to pull the trigger. In a twisted turn of events, the villain Gravik, played by Kingsley Ben-Adir, shapeshifted into Fury’s form, creating a disturbing dynamic between the two characters. However, the real Nick Fury arrives just in time for Smulders and Jackson to share an emotional final moment. Smulders describes the scene as “strange and kind of dark,” but she focused more on the emotional connection between the characters.
The death of Hill’s character was kept under wraps until the episode premiered, surprising many fans. Smulders reveals that the scene was filmed at The Piece Hall in Halifax, West Yorkshire, with a large number of background artists and onlookers present. She expresses her surprise that no images were leaked, attributing it to the respect Marvel has earned over the years for keeping their secrets under wraps.
While Smulders may be bidding farewell to Maria Hill for now, fans can’t help but wonder if there’s a possibility of a return in the future, especially with the introduction of the multiverse. Smulders remains open to the idea, stating, “I will always answer the call, but I have no idea what they have planned for future productions. But I guess anything’s possible in the multiverse.”
Reflecting on her time as Maria Hill, Smulders highlights the big scenes she filmed in the first and second Avengers movies as some of her most memorable moments. She recalls sitting around tables or standing on a ship, chatting with her co-stars and witnessing their performances. It was a magical experience for her to be a part of such a massive production and see it all come together on screen with CGI and other visual effects.
In the end, Smulders remains grateful for the incredible opportunity she’s had to play Maria Hill in the MCU. Despite her character’s untimely demise, she cherishes the memories and the relationships she’s formed with the talented people she’s worked with. As she looks towards the future, Smulders is open to whatever the multiverse may bring and is ready to answer the call if Maria Hill’s story continues in the MCU.
