Fiat is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the introduction of the Fiat 600e, a subcompact crossover. Initially confirmed for Europe with deliveries starting in the fall, there is speculation that the 600e may eventually be available in the U.S. as a replacement for the aging 500X.
Measuring just over 164 inches long, the 600e is slightly shorter than the Mini Countryman and takes design cues from the second-generation 500e electric hatch. This electric crossover is built on the updated CMP modular platform from Fiat’s parent company, Stellantis. The same platform is used in the Jeep Avenger, an electric subcompact crossover sold overseas, and will also be used in an upcoming electric subcompact crossover from Alfa Romeo.
Performance-wise, the 600e shares similarities with the Avenger. It features a single electric motor in the front that produces a peak power of 154 hp, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0-62 mph in nine seconds. The 54-kWh battery provides a range of approximately 200 miles on a full charge. Additionally, using a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10-80% in under 30 minutes.
In addition to the electric version, Fiat also plans to offer a hybrid powertrain option for the 600 model, becoming available from mid-2024. This demonstrates Fiat’s commitment to providing a range of alternative powertrain options to meet different customers’ needs.
The Fiat 600e is specifically targeted towards young families, taking inspiration from the original 600 model from the 1950s. The vehicle features ample storage solutions throughout, including a central tunnel, seat pockets, and front storage spaces. The trunk also offers a generous storage capacity of 12.7 cubic feet for a subcompact vehicle.
The Fiat 600e will be available in two grades at launch: an entry-level (Red) and a range-topping La Prima. The entry-level grade aligns with Stellantis’ support of the (Red) charity organization, which funds research aimed at ending immunodeficiency diseases.
The 600e comes equipped with a range of features, either as standard or available options. These include multiple USB ports, a wireless phone charger, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with navigation, a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a 6-speaker sound system, and popular electronic driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, drowsy driver detection, and voice activation.
The Fiat 600e is one of the two EVs that Fiat plans to launch in 2023. The other is the Topolino quadricycle, which is a clone of the Citroën Ami from Stellantis’ sister brand Citroën. Both models represent Fiat’s commitment to expanding its EV offerings and providing environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
While initially confirmed for Europe, there is a possibility that the Fiat 600e will make its way to the U.S. market, serving as a replacement for the aging 500X. This expansion would align with Fiat’s commitment to embracing electric mobility and meeting the increasing demand for sustainable vehicles. As the global automotive industry transitions to electric powertrains, Fiat aims to stay at the forefront by offering a diverse range of electric and hybrid models. Overall, the Fiat 600e brings together stylish design, practicality, and eco-friendliness in a subcompact crossover package, making it an attractive choice for environmentally conscious consumers.
