The Volkswagen Golf GTI, with its iconic gas engine, is reaching the end of its era as the hot hatch prepares to make the transition to an electric vehicle. Volkswagen announced in September that the next generation of the Golf, the ninth in its lineup, will be an electric vehicle based on the new EV platform known as the SSP. However, the SSP platform is not expected to be ready until 2028, so there is still plenty of time for the current gas-powered Golf to shine.
To keep the current eighth-generation Golf fresh until its electric successor arrives, Volkswagen plans to release an update. Prototypes for the updated Golf have already been spotted, and now we have the first glimpse of a prototype for the updated GTI. This prototype was seen testing alongside the current model and featured no camouflage gear, offering a clear view of the exterior styling changes that are in store. Additionally, there were also some updates revealed in the interior.
The exterior changes to the GTI are minimal, focusing on revised fascia designs at both the front and rear ends of the car. The familiar wide-mouth look remains, but with a flatter design for the top of the grille and a new mesh pattern. At the rear, there’s a revised diffuser design and redesigned exhaust tips. These subtle changes help to give the updated GTI a refreshed and modern appearance without straying too far from its iconic design.
Inside the updated GTI, there is a noticeable update to the dash, which now features a much larger infotainment screen. While the current Golf range offers an 8.3-inch infotainment screen, the updated model is rumored to have a screen as large as 15 inches. This would match the screen size of the redesigned global Tiguan, which debuted in September. The larger screen allows for improved visibility and easier navigation of the car’s infotainment system, enhancing the overall user experience.
As for mechanical changes, it is yet uncertain whether there will be any major modifications with this update. However, there is a possibility of extra power being added to the GTI. Currently, the front-wheel-drive GTI is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine producing 241 horsepower. The engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. However, VW confirmed in August that the manual transmission will be discontinued for the updated model. To commemorate the end of the manual transmission’s run, VW introduced a special GTI 380 model for the 2024 model year.
With the lack of camouflage on the prototype, it is expected that the updated Golf range, including the GTI, will debut soon. Look for these updated models to arrive in the U.S. next year as 2025 models. Additionally, an updated Golf R variant is also expected to be released.
Overall, the updated Volkswagen Golf GTI aims to bring a refreshed design, improved technology, and possibly increased power to the iconic hot hatch. While the transition to electric is on the horizon for the Golf lineup, the current gas-powered GTI is determined to leave a lasting impression. Fans can look forward to experiencing the updated GTI in the near future, along with the rest of the updated Golf range.
