Porsche has recently inaugurated the first of its exclusive electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, known as the Porsche Charging Lounge, in Bingen, Germany. This location was strategically chosen due to its proximity to the junction of the bustling A60 and A61 Autobahns. The German automaker plans to establish more stations not only in Germany, but also in Austria and Switzerland. Although Porsche Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke mentioned last year that plans for a network in the U.S. and China were being investigated, no concrete plans have been announced yet. However, Porsche provides its U.S. customers with a period of free charging at Electrify America stations and has been installing charging infrastructure at its dealerships.
Audi is also exploring the development of its own charging station network, while Mercedes-Benz intends to create public charging stations that prioritize its own customers by allowing them to reserve charging slots. These initiatives reflect the growing trend among luxury automakers to offer dedicated charging solutions to their EV customers, as the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise.
The Porsche Charging Lounge in Bingen features six direct current (DC) fast-charging points, each capable of providing up to 300 kW of charging power, as well as four alternating current (AC) charging points with a capacity of 22 kW. Porsche plans to introduce support for 400 kW charging at this location from next year. Both fully electric and plug-in hybrid models can be charged at the station, catering to a wide range of Porsche owners.
The charging station also offers an air-conditioned lounge area with restroom facilities, interactive displays showcasing Porsche-related content, and vending machines for beverages and snacks. Charging and billing are handled through the Porsche Charging Service, with the current electricity rate set at 0.33 euros ($0.36) per kilowatt hour (kWh). In addition to the Porsche Charging Lounge, the service provides access to over 436,000 public charging points across Europe, including more than 25,000 DC fast-chargers.
As part of the Volkswagen Group, Porsche is also a member of Europe’s Ionity network of charging stations, which aims to establish a network of high-power chargers along major European highways. Porsche has equipped luxury destinations, popular among its customer base, with AC charging points. These destinations span across 86 countries, totaling over 5,000 charging points. By 2025, this number is anticipated to rise to 7,500.
This announcement coincides with the recent collaboration between seven major automakers to develop a network of DC fast-charging stations in North America. The first station under this partnership is expected to open in the United States in mid-2024. This initiative demonstrates the commitment of the automotive industry to rapidly expanding the charging infrastructure to support the increasing adoption of EVs.
In conclusion, Porsche has unveiled its first exclusive EV charging station, the Porsche Charging Lounge, in Germany. The company plans to establish similar stations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while exploring options for a network in the U.S. and China. Audi and Mercedes-Benz are also actively pursuing their own charging station networks. The station in Bingen offers fast-charging capabilities for both electric and plug-in hybrid models, together with comfortable amenities for Porsche owners. Additionally, the Porsche Charging Service provides access to a vast network of public charging points across Europe. Porsche is also part of the Ionity network, while numerous luxury destinations worldwide have been equipped with AC charging points. This opening coincides with the collaboration of major automakers to create a DC fast-charging network in North America, indicating the industry’s commitment to supporting the growing EV market.
