A DeLand man with a history of making threats against the Volusia Sheriff’s Office helicopter has been arrested again after approaching the hangar and yelling at the Air One crew. Robert Moni, 59, of Newport Avenue in DeLand, was arrested Sunday night on three counts of aggravated stalking.
The latest encounter with Moni occurred on Saturday, when he showed up at the Air One hangar and began screaming at the crew and staff. He even went as far as moving in front of the building and continued yelling while a crew member was with his family in the parking lot. Moni made several statements about the Sheriff’s Office employees being evil and expressed his intention to help the devil in killing them.
The crew is familiar with Moni due to previous encounters, some of which were triggered by his belief in a conspiracy involving helicopters spying on him and causing him concussions by flying over his home.
This is not the first time Moni has been arrested for threatening the Sheriff’s Office helicopter. In 2018, he was taken into custody after making a phone call to an Orlando news station and threatening to shoot down Air One.
Following his arrest, Moni was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail on his new charges.
It is unfortunate that Moni’s behavior has escalated to this point. It is clear that he harbors strong negative feelings towards the Sheriff’s Office and is willing to express these feelings in a threatening manner. With his history of making threats and his belief in conspiracy theories involving helicopters, it is important for law enforcement to take his actions seriously and ensure the safety of their personnel.
The Sheriff’s Office should consider increasing security measures at the Air One hangar to prevent unauthorized individuals from approaching and threatening the crew. This could involve implementing stricter access controls, such as requiring identification or increasing the presence of security personnel.
Additionally, it may be beneficial for the Sheriff’s Office to work with mental health professionals to assess Moni’s mental state and potentially provide him with the necessary support and treatment. While it is understandable for law enforcement to take legal action to address his threatening behavior, addressing the underlying issues that contribute to his actions could be key in preventing future incidents.
Furthermore, the community should be made aware of this situation to ensure their safety. People should be vigilant and report any suspicious activity or threats they may witness involving Moni or anyone else who exhibits similar behavior. It is important for the community to come together and support law enforcement in their efforts to maintain safety and security.
In conclusion, the arrest of Robert Moni demonstrates the need for increased security measures and mental health support to address individuals who pose a threat to law enforcement personnel. By taking proactive steps to address these issues, we can help prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of both law enforcement officers and the community they serve.
