In addition to automakers, boat builders are also embracing electric technology. Among them is Austria’s Frauscher, which recently introduced the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air. This high-performance boat features an electric motor borrowed from the upcoming Porsche Macan EV, showcasing the adoption of electric powertrains in the marine industry.
Porsche played a significant role in developing the powertrain for the 28-foot 850 Fantom Air. This includes the electric motor, power electronics, and battery system. The boat is equipped with a single electric motor with an output of 536 horsepower, and a 100 kilowatt-hour battery, both sourced from the Macan EV.
The electric motor is positioned at the rear of the boat and connects to a typical marine Z-drive. The battery is also located at the rear, beneath the lounge area of the boat, and is suspended using wire rope mounts. Porsche designed these mounts to absorb shocks generated when the boat is operating at high speeds.
The 850 Fantom Air offers various modes that adjust the performance of its powertrain. The Sport Plus mode allows the boat to reach its maximum speed of 46 knots, equivalent to approximately 53 mph. However, at this speed, the range is limited. For optimal cruising, Porsche recommends a speed of 22 knots (25 mph), which allows the boat to operate for slightly over an hour, covering a distance of around 28 miles.
Thanks to the integration of Porsche’s 800-volt technology, the battery can be charged at rates up to 250 kilowatts using a DC fast charger. This means that the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes, making it convenient for users to quickly recharge and continue their maritime adventures.
The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air is scheduled to start deliveries in 2024. The initial release will consist of a limited special-edition model, with only 25 examples available. This exclusive version will have a price tag of 561,700 euros (approximately $591,400). Production of the boat will take place at Frauscher’s shipyard in Ohlsdorf, Austria.
As for the Porsche Macan EV, it is currently in its final development phase. The all-electric SUV is set to be launched in early 2024 and is expected to offer more than 600 horsepower. The Macan EV will be based on Volkswagen Group’s PPE dedicated EV platform, which will also be utilized by Audi for its upcoming Q6 E-Tron, expected to be released later this year. This shared platform demonstrates the collaboration between Porsche and Audi in the electric vehicle space, offering similar technological advancements in their respective models.
With the introduction of electric boats like the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air, it is evident that electric powertrains are not limited to the automotive industry. Boat builders are now leveraging this technology to provide customers with cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable options for enjoying time on the water. This shift towards electric propulsion in the marine sector aligns with the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate environmental impacts. As electric technology continues to advance, we can expect more innovative electric boats to emerge, transforming the boating experience and paving the way for a greener future on the water.
