GMC and American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) have collaborated to enhance the off-road capabilities of the newly launched Sierra HD AT4X with a concept build known as the Sierra Grande. This special edition was unveiled at the 2023 SEMA show and introduces even more overlanding features to the Sierra HD AT4X, which is already the top off-road edition of GMC’s heavy-duty pickup.
The Sierra HD AT4X, introduced for the 2024 model year, comes with a 1.5-inch suspension lift, Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, a rear e-locker, and upgraded underbody protection. Building upon this foundation, the Sierra Grande concept takes the capabilities to the next level. While the AT4X is already available in AEV Edition form, the Sierra Grande concept goes a step further.
In terms of aesthetics, the Sierra Grande retains the stamped steel front bumper found on the AEV Edition but adds an additional brush guard for extra protection. Four AEV 7000 series off-road lights and a winch are also mounted on the front bumper, further enhancing the off-road capabilities of the vehicle.
To accommodate larger tires, the Sierra Grande concept incorporates new fender flares that create additional clearance. This allows for the installation of 40-inch BFGoodrich tires, offering even more traction and ground clearance. These larger tires are mounted on AEV Salta XD wheels, replacing the stock 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory Mud-Terrain tires.
In addition to the exterior modifications, the Sierra Grande concept features an 8-foot aluminum tray bed, replacing the stock bed. This bed incorporates a vertical spare-tire mount, ensuring that a spare tire is always readily available during off-road adventures. At the rear, the Sierra Grande boasts a custom AEV rear bumper with its own winch, further enhancing the vehicle’s versatility and off-road capabilities.
Under the hood, the Sierra Grande concept is equipped with the optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 engine, which produces 470 horsepower and an impressive 975 lb-ft of torque in its stock form. The engine now breathes through a snorkel, providing improved air intake for off-road conditions. Power is transmitted to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s worth noting that the AT4X AEV Edition is also available with a gasoline 6.6-liter V-8 engine, offering 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque.
While the Sierra Grande concept is currently only a prototype, it serves as inspiration for potential future builds. Enthusiasts may choose to explore AEV’s extensive catalog to create a similar vehicle that suits their specific off-road needs. GMC also offers AEV Editions for the Sierra 1500 and the midsize Canyon, catering to buyers looking for smaller factory overlanding options.
In conclusion, the GMC Sierra Grande concept, developed in collaboration with AEV, takes the already impressive off-road capabilities of the Sierra HD AT4X to new heights. With enhanced suspension, larger tires, additional off-road lighting, and improved protection, this concept build showcases the potential for creating a truly capable off-road vehicle. While it may currently be a concept, it demonstrates the possibilities available to adventurous drivers seeking a reliable and capable off-road machine.
