Google has been actively working on integrating its generative AI capabilities with its search expertise since May. The project, known as the Google Search Generative Experience (SGE), aims to provide summarized and curated answers to user queries instead of presenting a list of webpages. Unlike Microsoft’s Bing AI, Google’s SGE program directly incorporates AI into the existing search bar, rather than running it as a separate chatbot assistant. Initially launched for US users in late May, Google has now expanded the SGE program to Japan and India.

Google’s AI-enhanced search feature is now available in Japanese for users in Japan, and in both English and Hindi for users in India. In addition to typing their queries, users can also utilize voice input to simply speak their questions and listen to the responses. The SGE program includes dedicated ad slots throughout the search page, where search ads will continue to appear.

Google claims that people using SGE are having a positive experience, particularly when seeking help with complex queries and asking new types of questions. The company states that the highest satisfaction scores for SGE come from the 18-24 age group, although it does not provide specific data to support this claim.

Generative AI technology gained significant popularity with the release of ChatGPT last November. However, as it gained popularity, concerns regarding its potential misuse started to emerge. The technology has already been used in online scams, leading to increased scrutiny from federal regulators and Congress. Efforts are being made to crack down on the misuse of generative AI capabilities.

Google’s expansion of the SGE program into new markets reflects the company’s commitment to integrating generative AI into its search functions. By providing summarized and curated answers, Google aims to enhance the search experience for users, making it easier and more efficient to find relevant information. The addition of voice input also offers convenience for users who prefer to speak their queries rather than type them.

The availability of the AI-enhanced search feature in multiple languages, such as Japanese and Hindi, demonstrates Google’s efforts to cater to a diverse user base. This expansion increases access to the SGE program and allows users from different regions to benefit from the advanced search capabilities offered by generative AI.

Google’s focus on incorporating AI into its search functions aligns with the broader trend in the tech industry of exploring and developing AI capabilities. As the demand for more sophisticated search engines and virtual assistants grows, companies like Google are investing in AI technologies to deliver more personalized and efficient search experiences.

However, as with any new technology, there are challenges and concerns. The misuse of generative AI systems, as evidenced by online scams, is a significant issue that needs to be addressed. Regulatory bodies and lawmakers are actively working to identify and address potential risks associated with generative AI, aiming to protect users from fraudulent activities and ensure the responsible use of this technology.

In conclusion, Google’s expansion of the SGE program into Japan and India represents the company’s ongoing effort to integrate generative AI with its search capabilities. By providing summarized and curated answers, incorporating voice input, and expanding into new markets, Google aims to enhance the search experience for users around the world. However, the misuse of generative AI technology remains a concern, and efforts to mitigate such risks are necessary to safeguard user interests and maintain trust in AI-powered search systems.
