Google is expanding its Chromebook lineup with the introduction of Chromebook Plus devices. These devices aim to provide a consistent and quality experience for users by ensuring a set of guaranteed specifications. The Chromebook Plus models will feature an Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processor, at least 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. They will also come with a full 1080p IPS display and a 1080p webcam.
Google is partnering with four OEM partners – HP, Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo – to release a total of eight Chromebook Plus models. Except for two 15.6-inch models, all devices will have 14-inch screens, making them versatile options for most users. Despite the “Plus” name, these devices are not strictly premium hardware. They start at $399, offering a good balance between affordability and quality.
In addition to the hardware specifications, Chromebook Plus devices will also receive software enhancements. These include a Material You design, dynamic wallpapers, and improvements to video calls using AI-powered features like auto “improve lighting” and “noise cancellation.” There is also a new File Sync feature that keeps Google Drive files locally available when offline.
Google announced a partnership with Adobe, enabling Chromebook Plus buyers to enjoy a three-month trial of Photoshop on the web. This is the first time Chromebook users will have access to Photoshop. Adobe’s Firefly generative AI models will also be available to Chromebook Plus owners.
Looking ahead, Google teased upcoming AI-powered software improvements for Chromebook Plus models. These include a text composer that understands the context of the tool being used and a generative image AI for creating custom wallpapers and image backgrounds for video calls.
The initial eight Chromebook Plus models will be released on October 8. Lenovo will offer the IdeaPad Slim 3i and IdeaPad Flex 5i, Acer will have the Chromebook Plus 514 and Chromebook Plus 515, and HP will offer a 15.6-inch model and the Chromebook Plus x360 14 inch. ASUS is also releasing two models, the Chromebook Plus CX3402 and Chromebook Plus CM34 Flip.
Overall, Google’s Chromebook Plus initiative aims to provide users with well-designed laptops that offer powerful hardware at an affordable price. With guaranteed specifications and software enhancements, Chromebook Plus devices seek to offer a consistent and quality experience for users.
