Famous Ferrari collector David Lee recently made a return to Jay Leno’s Garage, showcasing one of the latest additions to the Ferrari stable—the 296 GTB supercar. As Ferrari’s entry-level mid-engine car, the 296 GTB coupe made its debut in 2021 and has since been followed by the release of the 296 GTS convertible sibling in 2022.
Lee is lucky enough to be one of the first owners of the 296 GTB in the country. His vehicle stands out with its stunning Giallo Modena finish, complemented by silver accents, including silver racing stripes. Notably, these stripes are part of the exclusive Assetto Fiorano package, which offers more than just aesthetics. By incorporating lighter door panels, various carbon-fiber pieces, and a Lexan rear windscreen, the package manages to shave off around 33 pounds in weight. Furthermore, it also includes adjustable Multimatic shocks, additional aerodynamic elements, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.
Despite these enhancements, the Assetto Fiorano package does not provide any extra power. Each 296 model is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine and an electric motor, positioned between the engine and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This powertrain generates an impressive peak output of 818 hp, with drive sent exclusively to the rear wheels. Ferrari states that the 296 GTB can achieve a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 205 mph. Moreover, thanks to the presence of a 7.45-kilowatt-hour battery, the car even offers a small electric range.
Both Leno and Lee expressed their admiration for the compact size of the 296 GTB when compared to Ferrari’s other mid-engine model, the SF90. Lee went so far as to describe the SF90 as taking up the entire lane. This difference is particularly noticeable in areas with narrow roads, such as Ferrari’s homeland in Italy, where Lee recalls his SF90 occupying the entire width of the road. Leno and Lee also agree that the 296 GTB is one of the most enjoyable Ferraris to drive among the current lineup.
The 296 series serves as a direct successor to the F8 series, whose origins can be traced back to the iconic 458 Italia launched over a decade ago. While production of the F8 Tributo has come to an end, the F8 Spider is still being manufactured, although it will also soon bid farewell. Once this happens, Ferrari’s mid-engine lineup will no longer consist of non-electrified models.
In addition to the 296 GTB and 296 GTS, Ferrari has also introduced the 296 GT3 race car as a replacement for the 488 GT3. This racing car takes part in prestigious events like the IMSA SportsCar Championship and SRO Endurance Cup, showcasing Ferrari’s commitment to performance and competition.
