Stephan Komandarev’s film “Blaga’s Lessons” has been awarded the top prize, the Crystal Globe, at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The festival, which took place in the Czech Republic, announced the winners during its closing ceremony. “Blaga’s Lessons”, a Bulgarian/German co-production, also saw its star, Eli Skorcheva, win best actress.
Another film that received recognition at the festival was Behrooz Karamizade’s “Empty Nets”, a German-Iranian co-production, which was awarded the special jury prize. Vincent Perez’s French film “The Edge of the Blade” won the audience award, and Cyril Aris’ “Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano”, a German-Lebanese entry, received a special jury mention.
In terms of individual awards, Babak Jalali was honored as best director for the American film “Fremont”, and Herbert Nordrum won best actor for his work in the Swedish/Norwegian/French co-production “The Hypnosis”. The jury, which consisted of notable figures in the film industry such as Patricia Clarkson and John Nein, selected the winners.
In addition to the main competition, the Proxima competition also revealed its award winners. Yoo Ji-young’s South Korean film “Birth” won the Grand Prix, while Saurav Rai’s Indian/Nepalese co-production “Guras” received a special jury prize. Albert Hospodářský’s Czech/Slovak effort “Brutal Heat” was given a special jury mention.
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, known as Central Europe’s largest cinema party, took place from June 30 to July 8. The festival opened with the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Russell Crowe and a festival president’s award to Alicia Vikander. The opening ceremony also featured an ice skating number and concerts by Morcheeba and Russell Crowe’s band, Indoor Garden Party.
