Spamalot, the Tony Award-winning musical, is set to make its return to Broadway this fall in the first-ever revival of the show. After a successful run at the Kennedy Center in May, the production will be playing at the St. James Theatre starting October 31, with the official opening night scheduled for November 16. The original Broadway run of Spamalot took place from 2005 to 2009 and received critical acclaim, winning three Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Based on the beloved 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle, one of the members of the iconic Monty Python comedy group, and music by John Du Prez and Idle himself. The original Broadway production was directed by the legendary Mike Nichols, with choreography by Casey Nicholaw. For this revival, Josh Rhodes, who led the production at the Kennedy Center, will be directing and choreographing the show on Broadway.
Although the casting for the Broadway revival of Spamalot has not yet been announced, the Kennedy Center run featured talented performers such as Alex Brightman (known for his role in Beetlejuice) as Sir Lancelot, James Monroe Iglehart (known for his role in Aladdin) as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer (also from Beetlejuice) as the Lady of the Lake, and Rob McClure (known for his role in Mrs. Doubtfire) as The Historian.
This revival production of Spamalot is particularly significant as it marks the first time a production from the Kennedy Center’s Broadway Center Stage series, led by Jeffrey Finn, will transfer to Broadway. The Broadway Center Stage series aims to bring classic musicals to a broader audience through concert-style performances.
Spamalot will be joining a season of exciting musical revivals on Broadway, including Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, which stars Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez; The Wiz, starring Wayne Brady; and the highly anticipated revival of Cabaret, which is yet to announce its casting details.
The St. James Theatre, where Spamalot will be performed, was previously occupied by the musical New York, New York, which closed on July 30. The announcement of Spamalot’s return came just one week after the closing of New York, New York.
Spamalot is a hilarious and irreverent musical that pays homage to the iconic Monty Python comedy. With its clever book and lyrics by Eric Idle, catchy music by John Du Prez and Idle, and the imaginative direction and choreography by the likes of Mike Nichols, Casey Nicholaw, and Josh Rhodes, the production promises to be a must-see event for Broadway fans.
The show is known for its outrageous comedy and memorable musical numbers, including the infectiously catchy “The Song That Goes Like This” and the show-stopping “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.” Audiences can expect a riotous and entertaining evening of laughter and song as they follow King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on their quest for the Holy Grail.
Spamalot’s return to Broadway is an exciting event that will bring joy and laughter to theatergoers once again. With its talented creative team, hilarious script, and memorable songs, this revival promises to be a standout production in the Broadway season. Be sure to mark your calendars for this fall and experience the magic of Spamalot live on stage at the St. James Theatre.
