Lucid Motors, the California-based electric vehicle (EV) startup, is set to unveil its newest creation, the Gravity SUV, at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 16th. Following the debut, the SUV will begin production in late 2024 and is expected to hit the market as a 2025 model in the U.S.
The Gravity SUV is a highly anticipated follow-up to Lucid’s groundbreaking Air sedan. Although the company has previously released teaser images of a camouflaged prototype undergoing testing, the specifications of the final production model have yet to be revealed. However, Lucid has promised that the Gravity will offer more range than any other electric SUV currently on the market.
Underneath its sleek exterior, the Gravity will share the same modular platform as the Air, known as the Lucid Electric Advanced Platform (LEAP). This innovative platform supports outputs of over 1,200 horsepower and offers range estimates of over 500 miles in the Air. It is anticipated that the Gravity will offer similar impressive performance capabilities.
In terms of design, the Gravity is expected to feature a similar styling aesthetic to the Air. The SUV will offer seating for up to seven passengers, split over three rows. Additionally, buyers will have the option to choose between a two-row configuration with five seats or a three-row setup with six seats, where the second row receives two individual reclining seats.
One notable feature that the Gravity will share with the Air is a glass roof, offering passengers a panoramic view of their surroundings. Lucid has also confirmed that the SUV will come equipped with a next-generation digital dash, complete with the company’s latest user interface and advanced driver-assist technologies.
Production of the Gravity will take place at Lucid’s existing plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, where the Air is currently being manufactured. It is possible that semi knocked-down examples of the SUV will also be assembled at Lucid’s new facility in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the company recently opened a second plant there.
Following its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Lucid plans to begin the reservation process for the Gravity. Although pricing details have not yet been released, it is likely that the SUV will follow a similar strategy to the Air, launching initially with higher-priced grades before introducing more affordable options in the future. For reference, the entry-level Pure RWD grade of the Air, which starts at $77,400 before destination charges, was only introduced this month, despite the Air’s initial launch in 2020.
As the EV market continues to expand, Lucid Motors aims to solidify its position as a leading manufacturer of luxury electric vehicles. With the debut of the Gravity SUV, Lucid is expected to offer consumers a highly advanced and luxurious electric SUV option that boasts impressive performance and an industry-leading range. Automotive enthusiasts and industry experts eagerly await the official unveiling of the Gravity next month and anticipate the SUV’s arrival on the market in the coming years.
