Maserati is set to unveil a new track car based on their MC20 supercar, known as the MCXtrema. Confirming its existence, Maserati announced that the MCXtrema will make its debut on August 18th during The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, one of the highlights of Monterey Car Week. Limited to just 62 examples, all build slots for the MCXtrema have already been claimed.
The production of the MCXtrema is being handled by Maserati’s Fuoriserie personalization department, which has the potential to create additional low-volume cars in the future, including custom one-offs. The MCXtrema serves as a prime example of the capabilities of the Fuoriserie department.
The MCXtrema is in a league of its own, distinguished from the MC20 and its GT2 race car variant. Unlike the race car, the MCXtrema doesn’t adhere to any racing regulations, granting the designers the freedom to create a truly extreme and unrestricted design. The bespoke carbon-fiber body is built upon the same Dallara-developed carbon tub as the MC20, but with the addition of an FIA-homologated roll cage for enhanced safety.
Powering the MCXtrema is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine borrowed from the MC20, but with a significant increase in output. Maserati has dialed up the horsepower to 730 hp, compared to the MC20’s 621 hp. The key upgrades were made in the turbocharging system, according to Maserati. The car is equipped with a 6-speed sequential transmission and paddle shifters for quick and precise gear changes. Additionally, the MCXtrema features adjustable aerodynamics and suspension, lightweight Lexan windows, Brembo brakes for exceptional stopping power, and 18-inch forged wheels with center locks.
While Maserati has not released detailed specifications, they have hinted at a dry weight of under 2,755 pounds for the MCXtrema. This light weight, combined with the powerful engine, promises impressive performance on the track.
To enhance the ownership experience, Maserati plans to offer a comprehensive program centered around the MCXtrema. This program will include driver coaching courses, track experiences, and logistics support, similar to what is offered by other high-performance car manufacturers like Ferrari and Lamborghini. Maserati aims to ensure that owners of the MCXtrema can fully harness the car’s capabilities and enjoy their track experiences to the fullest.
The MCXtrema is an exciting addition to Maserati’s lineup, showcasing the brand’s commitment to creating exclusive and high-performance vehicles. With only 62 examples to be built, each one will be a rare and coveted piece of automotive excellence. As the MCXtrema makes its debut at The Quail, car enthusiasts and Maserati fans alike are eagerly awaiting its unveiling and the opportunity to witness this wild track car in action.
