Netflix’s hit series Squid Game has expanded its cast for season two, with eight new actors joining the show. The newcomers include Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an. They will join the returning cast members Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byun-hun, Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo, as well as previously announced new additions Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.
The cast recently gathered for their first table read of season two, and production is set to begin later this year. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator, director, and executive producer of the series, will helm every episode of the new season.
Although details about the roles of the new cast members are being kept under wraps for now, several of them have previously appeared in other Korean series on Netflix. Park Gyu-young and Lee Jin-uk both had roles in the first two seasons of Sweet Home, Kang Ae-sim appeared in Move to Heaven, and Won Ji-an made her debut in the first season of D.P. Additionally, Lee David and Lee Jin-uk have previously worked with Hwang Dong-hyuk on other projects.
Squid Game premiered in October 2021 and quickly became a global phenomenon. It has become Netflix’s biggest series of all time, with 2.2 billion hours watched worldwide in its first 13 weeks. The series also broke Netflix’s recently updated view metric, with the equivalent of 265.2 million complete runs of season one. Squid Game was critically acclaimed and received six Emmy Awards in 2022, including Best Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae and Best Directing for a Drama Series for Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Hwang Dong-hyuk and Kim Ji-yeon serve as executive producers of the series. With the success of the first season and the addition of new talented actors, fans can expect another thrilling and thought-provoking season of Squid Game.
