The redesigned Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class compact crossover was released earlier this year, and now the sporty AMG variants are set to follow. The GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance will soon be available to consumers, offering powerful performance and a sleek coupe-like design.
Mercedes recently unveiled the coupe-like versions of the GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance, which will be available alongside the standard-body versions that were introduced in July. The GLC 43 models are expected to arrive in showrooms as 2024 models early next year, while the GLC 63 S E Performance models will follow as 2025 models later in 2024. Pricing information for these models will be announced closer to their on-sale dates.
The coupe-like body style of these AMG variants may sacrifice some practicality, but it compensates with a more sporty and appealing appearance. According to Michael Schiebe, AMG’s CEO, the coupe-like design is aimed at customers who desire a sporty lifestyle and dynamic design alongside impressive performance.
The cargo space in the GLC 43 Coupe is slightly larger, with 52.6 cubic feet, while the GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe offers 47.1 cubic feet due to the presence of the vehicle’s battery and rear-mounted motor. It’s worth noting that the GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe is a plug-in hybrid, while the GLC 43 Coupe features mild-hybrid technology.
The powertrain in the GLC 43 Coupe is the same as that found in the latest C 43 sedan, which was released for the 2023 model year. It consists of a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine with a Formula 1-style electric-aided turbocharger, as well as a mild-hybrid system that provides an additional boost. The GLC 43 Coupe has a peak output of 416 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.
On the other hand, the GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe offers significantly more power. Its powertrain generates a peak output of 671 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine with an electric-aided turbocharger and a mild-hybrid system in the front, as well as a single electric motor in the rear of the vehicle. This results in acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 171 mph, making it a very impressive and high-performance compact crossover.
However, the extra power and complexity of the GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe’s powertrain come with a weight penalty. Although the curb weight hasn’t been specifically mentioned, it is expected to be higher than the 4,654 pounds of the latest C 63 S E Performance sedan, which shares the same powertrain. The added weight does offer an advantage in terms of better weight distribution compared to the previous GLC 63, which only had a V-8 engine in the front.
Both the GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance coupes feature a fully variable mechanical all-wheel-drive system, rear-wheel steering, and a quick-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. They also come equipped with high-performance brakes, speed-sensitive steering, and suspension with adjustable dampers as standard. The GLC 63 S E Performance offers an optional active anti-roll system for enhanced handling at its limits.
Inside, both models sport typical AMG styling cues, including premium materials like nappa leather, sport seats, and AMG-branded pedals and floor mats. Unique AMG graphics can be found in the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Additionally, AMG has included its standard drive mode selector, known as Dynamic Select, with five programs for the GLC 43 and eight for the GLC 63 S E Performance. These modes include adjustments for the electric stability control, with one mode specifically designed for track use.
In conclusion, the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class now offers sporty AMG variants in the form of the GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance coupes. These models provide exceptional performance, a stylish coupe-like design, and a range of advanced features and technologies. Whether you prioritize power, style, or both, these AMG variants are sure to impress.
