Mercedes-Benz has recently used social media to confirm that the highly anticipated CLE-Class coupe will be making its debut on July 5. The CLE-Class is a brand-new nameplate for Mercedes and is set to replace both the previous C-Class Coupe and E-Class Coupe models. This stylish coupe is expected to hit dealerships later this year or early next year as a 2024 model.
In addition to the coupe, Mercedes-Benz is also planning to release a CLE-Class Cabriolet, which will serve as the replacement for the former convertible versions of the C-Class and E-Class. This strategy mirrors what Mercedes did with the CLK-Class around two decades ago. The CLK-Class shared many mechanical similarities with the C-Class but was positioned as a higher-end model.
The upcoming CLE-Class is likely to have close ties to the newly redesigned 2022 C-Class. Teaser photos and spy shots of prototypes reveal that the CLE-Class shares a similar front end with the C-Class, although it boasts a more muscular stance and slightly slimmer headlights. The taillight design, on the other hand, is reminiscent of the redesigned 2024 GLC-Class Coupe.
Inside, buyers can expect to find similar interior details to that of the C-Class. This means that the CLE-Class will likely feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch infotainment screen with a portrait-style layout as standard.
Powertrains will likely be shared between both models as well. Currently, the standard C-Class is only available in the U.S. in C300 guise, which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine producing 255 horsepower. This is further enhanced by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds an extra 20 horsepower for short bursts. AMG variants, such as the 2023 C 43 with 402 horsepower and the 2024 C 63 S E Performance with 671 horsepower, should also be available for the CLE-Class.
It’s no secret that sedan sales have been declining, but the demand for sporty two-door cars is even worse off. Consequently, many automakers have either reduced their coupe and convertible offerings or eliminated them altogether. At Mercedes, popular models like the SLK-Class, AMG GT Roadster, S-Class Coupe, and S-Class Cabriolet have all been discontinued without direct replacements.
Mercedes-Benz’s introduction of the CLE-Class coupe and cabriolet is a strategic move to appeal to customers who desire a stylish and sporty car that stands out from the crowd. With its modern design, cutting-edge technology, shared powertrains with the C-Class, and the legacy of the CLK-Class, the CLE-Class has high expectations to meet. Fans of the brand eagerly await the official unveiling on July 5 and anticipate the arrival of the CLE-Class at dealerships in the near future.
