Meta recently disclosed information about a massive network of fake accounts that had been engaged in spreading pro-China propaganda on its platform. The company stated that the takedown was linked to individuals associated with Chinese law enforcement who also operated similar fake accounts on numerous other social media platforms.

Meta stated that the fake accounts were primarily focused on spreading pro-China messages, including positive commentary about China and its province Xinjiang, as well as criticisms of the United States, Western foreign policies, and critics of the Chinese government, including journalists and researchers. While the company attributed these accounts to law enforcement figures within China, it did not specifically name any agency or organization. However, Meta did confirm that it found evidence linking these fake accounts to a previously identified pro-China influence operation that first emerged in 2019 and was referred to as “Spamouflage” by security researchers.
Despite the significant scale of the operation, Meta noted that the individuals behind the fake accounts were not particularly skilled or successful in their attempts to gain widespread attention. In its quarterly security report, Meta stated, “Spamouflage consistently struggled to reach beyond its own (fake) echo chamber. Many comments on Spamouflage posts that we have observed came from other Spamuffle accounts trying to make it look like they were more popular than they were.”
Nonetheless, Ben Nimmo emphasized that the entities behind Spamouflage were unlikely to give up and would likely continue their efforts. He stated, “This operation is large, prolific and persistent. We expect it to keep on trying.”
