Microsoft is set to launch an Xbox credit card exclusively for Xbox testers in the United States. The Xbox Mastercard, issued by Barclays, does not have an annual fee and offers points that can be redeemed for Xbox games and add-ons.
According to Dave McCarthy, CVP of Xbox player services, the Xbox Mastercard allows players to earn card points through everyday purchases, which can then be used to redeem games and add-ons on xbox.com. Initially, the credit card will be available exclusively to Xbox Insiders in the 50 United States starting on September 21, 2023. However, it will be made available to all Xbox players in the country in 2024.
Unlike Microsoft Rewards, the Xbox Mastercard has its own separate pot of points that can be earned through purchases made with the card. Every dollar spent generates one card point, and once a player accumulates 1,500 card points, they can claim a $15 gift card redeemable at Microsoft’s online Xbox store. Additionally, Xbox Mastercard owners can earn five points for every dollar spent on eligible products from the online Microsoft Store, three points for every dollar spent on streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus, and three points for every dollar spent on delivery services like Grubhub and DoorDash.
The APR rates for the Xbox Mastercard range from 20.99 percent to 31.99 percent based on credit. The full terms and conditions for the credit card can be found on the Barclays website.
As an added bonus, card members will receive a 5,000-point bonus (equivalent to a $50 value) after their first purchase with the card. Additionally, new Game Pass members will receive three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and this three-month subscription can also be gifted to friends or family if the cardholder is already a Game Pass member.
Customers will have a choice of five different designs for the Xbox Mastercard and the option to customize it with their gamertag. Xbox Insiders in the continental US, Alaska, and Hawaii can begin applying for the credit card on September 21, 2023. Microsoft has also announced that the Xbox Mastercard will be made available in waves to Xbox Insiders throughout the fall.
This marks the first time in over a decade that Microsoft has offered an Xbox credit card. Previously, the company provided Xbox Live subscribers with a free Xbox Live Diamond loyalty card in 2005, which offered discounts at participating retailers. Sony also has its own PlayStation credit card, which utilizes a points-based system that can be redeemed for various products, including games, movies, and electronics.
In conclusion, Microsoft’s launch of the Xbox Mastercard offers a unique opportunity for Xbox testers in the US to earn points and redeem them for Xbox games and add-ons. With its attractive rewards system and customization options, the Xbox Mastercard aims to enhance the gaming experience for Xbox players while providing them with additional benefits for their everyday purchases.
