Ford is continuing to expand its lineup of off-road capable vehicles, with the latest development being the testing of a more rugged version of the Bronco Sport. The prototype spotted in testing shows several key upgrades that point to a more off-road capable version of the compact crossover being developed.
At present, the most capable Bronco Sport available is the Badlands. This model boasts impressive off-road credentials, but it seems that Ford is looking to push the envelope even further. The company also offers a Black Diamond Off-Road Package for the Big Bend and Outer Banks grades, providing off-road enhancements for these models. It’s likely that a new, even more off-road capable version would be positioned as a new grade in the Bronco Sport lineup.
The prototype currently in testing is heavily camouflaged, but some key details are visible. The front and rear fascias have been redesigned, likely to improve approach and departure angles and possibly accommodate larger skid plates. It also appears that the ground clearance of the prototype may be higher than the Bronco Sport’s standard 8.8 inches, which would be a significant improvement for off-road performance.
One of the most telling clues about the prototype’s off-road capabilities is the tire selection. The prototype is equipped with Goodyear Territory Mud-Terrain tires, a type of tire used on more off-road capable versions of the larger Bronco. These tires have not previously appeared on a Bronco Sport model, indicating that this prototype is being developed with serious off-road performance in mind.
In addition to the new tires, the prototype also features a new wheel design, similar to that used on the new 2024 Mustang Mach-E Rally. This rugged wheel design further reinforces the off-road capabilities of the prototype. Additionally, a dual-tip exhaust can be seen, though it is only a temporary unit used for testing purposes and will likely be replaced with a production exhaust system as development advances.
Currently, the Bronco Sport is offered with a choice of a 181-hp 1.5-liter turbo-3 engine or a 250-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine. There have been rumors of a hybrid option in the works for the Bronco Sport, though it is not clear if this is what is being tested on the prototype. If Ford is indeed planning a new Bronco Sport variant, it’s possible that a debut next year as a 2025 model could be on the horizon.
The expansion of off-road capabilities within the Ford lineup is an exciting development for enthusiasts and adventurers alike. With the potential addition of a more capable version of the Bronco Sport, Ford is continuing to demonstrate its commitment to providing vehicles that can handle a wide range of off-road challenges. As development of this new variant progresses, we can expect to see more details emerge about the specific enhancements and features that will make this Bronco Sport model stand out as a true off-road champion. Stay tuned for more updates as Ford continues to push the boundaries of off-road performance.
