Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo since 2014, recently unveiled an “adaptive display” prototype at Lenovo Tech World ’23. This concept device can be rolled into a phone, stand, or smart bracelet, similar to a prototype Lenovo exhibited in 2016. The prototype features an FHD+ pOLED display that can be bent and shaped into different forms based on users’ needs.
The rollable smartphone has a 6.9-inch display and runs on a full Android experience. However, when placed upright in a stand mode, it switches to a compact form of Android on a 4.6-inch section of the display. This flexibility allows users to use the device as a traditional smartphone or bend it partway to sit on a desk. It can even be wrapped around the wrist like a smart slap bracelet.
While the adaptive display concept is exciting, it may not become an available consumer product anytime soon. Lenovo has a reputation for shipping consumer products that push boundaries and defy expectations, so there is still a possibility that this concept could become a reality in the future.
In addition to the rollable display prototype, Motorola showcased several AI-powered concepts. They demonstrated the power of generative AI to provide users with better wallpaper options. Users can upload or capture a picture of their outfit, and the AI will generate multiple unique images that reflect their style. These AI-made images can then be transformed into custom wallpapers for the bendy phone.
Motorola also announced the development of MotoAI, a personal voice/text assistant for PCs and smartphones. MotoAI runs on a large language model (LLM) and can answer questions, draft messages, schedule tasks, and more. The assistant prioritizes privacy by processing data and running tasks locally, enhancing the personalized experience as it learns more about the user over time.
Additionally, Motorola teased a document scanning feature that aims to improve image quality by minimizing wrinkles and shadows. This innovation ensures that scanned documents or images appear crisp and clear.
While these concepts and features showcased by Motorola are exciting, it is important to note that they may not be immediately available. They represent the company’s ongoing research and development efforts aimed at pushing technological boundaries and enhancing the user experience.
Motorola’s commitment to innovation and its partnership with Lenovo positions the company as a leader in the smartphone industry. As technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Motorola incorporates these concepts and features into future consumer products.
