Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz has announced that Laurence Gendreau has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted murder in connection with the random assault of a 6-year-old boy. Gendreau lifted the child over his head and slammed him into the ground head-first, resulting in a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and a collapsed lung. The incident took place in front of the boy’s grandparents’ Kew Gardens home.
District Attorney Katz expressed her heartbreak over the brutality displayed by Gendreau towards an innocent child. She stated that with this sentence, justice has been achieved for the young boy and his family, and a dangerous man has been taken off the streets.
Gendreau, 39, was convicted by a jury last month of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, grand larceny in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree. Justice Ira Margulis sentenced Gendreau to 25 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
According to the charges and trial testimony, the incident occurred on October 10, 2019, at approximately 4:45 p.m. The 6-year-old boy was waiting with his older brother outside their grandparents’ Kew Gardens home for a pizza delivery. Gendreau, who was walking by, suddenly charged at the child while yelling at him. He then lifted the boy over his head and slammed him onto the pavement head-first.
The boy’s brother ran inside their grandparents’ house to alert the family while Gendreau fled. The grandfather chased after Gendreau and managed to flag down a police officer, who arrested Gendreau near Lefferts Boulevard and Metropolitan Avenue.
The victim was immediately taken to the hospital, where he received treatment for a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and a collapsed lung. Fortunately, he has since made a full recovery.
Earlier on the same day, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Gendreau approached an 83-year-old woman on Union Turnpike in Kew Gardens and snatched her iPad. The stolen device was ultimately recovered from Gendreau when he was arrested after assaulting the 6-year-old.
This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the safety and protection of children. It is crucial for communities to come together to ensure that children can grow up in a secure environment free from harm.
The sentencing of Gendreau to 25 years in prison sends a strong message that such heinous acts against children will not be tolerated. It serves as a deterrent to potential offenders and reassures the public that justice will be served.
In addition to the prison sentence, the five years of post-release supervision will provide oversight and support to Gendreau as he reintegrates into society. This measure aims to prevent future offenses and ensure public safety.
The successful prosecution of Gendreau was made possible through the diligent efforts of the District Attorney’s office, the police officers involved in the arrest, and the testimony of witnesses during the trial. Their dedication and commitment to seeking justice for the young victim and his family deserve recognition.
As we reflect on this tragic incident, it is crucial to remember the resilience of the young boy who survived this horrifying assault. His recovery is a testament to his strength and the support he received from his family and medical professionals.
Moving forward, it is essential for communities, parents, and caregivers to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect children from potential dangers. Education and awareness programs should be implemented to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to recognize and prevent child abuse and violence.
By working together, we can build a safer environment for children and ensure their well-being. The sentencing of Gendreau serves as a milestone in the pursuit of justice and the protection of the most vulnerable members of our society.
