However, the officers refused to comply with the victim’s requests.
Subsequently, when the victim attempted to check on the child, Zapata accused him of interfering with EMS and threatened to arrest him. Another officer then started backing the victim down the apartment hallway. When the victim swatted the officer’s hand away, the officer restrained the victim by grabbing both of his wrists. It is important to note that, at this point, the victim did not pose any physical threat.
In a shocking turn of events, Zapata allegedly stepped forward and began punching the victim in the face and head more than a dozen times in just nine seconds. It is clear from this description that the excessive force used by Zapata was completely unwarranted and disproportionate to the situation. Fortunately, two other officers recognized Zapata’s actions as excessive and intervened by pulling him away from the victim. The NYPD subsequently suspended Zapata following the incident, and in August 2023, he was demoted from the rank of sergeant to a police officer.
