Pascal Plante’s Red Rooms (Les Chambres Rouges) emerged as the top winner at the Fantasia Film Festival’s Cheval Noir competition. This French-language thriller, which explores a woman’s obsession with a high-profile serial killer case, received critical acclaim and secured several awards.
Red Rooms opened the 27th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival, held in Canada. Its compelling storyline and impressive execution earned it the coveted Cheval Noirs for Best Feature, Best Screenplay (Pascal Plante), and Best Score (Dominique Plante). Additionally, lead actress Juliette Gariépy was recognized with an Outstanding Performance award for her captivating portrayal.
The film premiered internationally at Fantasia following its debut at the Crystal Global competition in Karlovy Vary. Consequently, the Fantasia jury, led by David Hewlett, bestowed the Best Director prize upon Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping for their mesmerizing work in Femmes. Zelda Adams and John Adams received the Best Cinematography trophy for their exceptional collaboration on Where The Devil Roams.
In the realm of acting, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett was celebrated with the Outstanding Performance award for his role in Femme. However, Nicolas Cage, who was scheduled to receive the Cheval Noir career achievement award for his remarkable four-decade career in Hollywood, had to cancel his trip to Canada due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Cage was also expected to premiere his latest film, Sympathy for the Devil, at the festival. The film reunites Cage with director Yuval Adler and co-star Joel Kinnaman after their previous collaboration in The Secrets We Keep.
Despite this setback, the Fantasia Film Festival continues to delight audiences with a diverse range of genre films. Its lineup includes both local and international productions, showcasing the immense talent and creativity within the industry. The festival’s closing film, We Are Zombies, is set to be a thrilling delight. Directed by Canadian cult film collective RKSS, led by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, the film features an ensemble cast comprising Megan Peta Hill, Alexandre Nachi, and Derek Johns.
