Patrick Mahomes, the 28-year-old NFL quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion, revealed an interesting fact about his game-day routine during a recent appearance on Peyton and Eli Manning’s “Manningcast” show. He admitted to wearing the same lucky pair of underwear for every game since his rookie season. Yes, you read that right! Mahomes has been wearing the same underwear for over 100 NFL games, and he only occasionally washes them.
While this might sound bizarre to some, Mahomes explained the origin of this superstition. “First, my wife Brittany got them for me. So I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them,” Mahomes said during the interview. He also attributed the lucky streak of his career to these red underwear, stating, “At the same time, I threw them on that first season, we had a pretty good season that season. I only wear ’em for game day though, so they’re not too worn down.”
And it seems like Mahomes might be onto something with this tradition. The Chiefs had a phenomenal 12-4 season in 2018, with Mahomes earning the league MVP title at just 23 years old. Since then, the Chiefs have gone on to win 2 Super Bowls and have been consistently successful in the NFL.
When asked if he washes the underwear, Mahomes confessed, “I wash ’em every once in a while at least. If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash ’em. I gotta keep it rollin’.” It seems like superstition and winning streaks go hand in hand for Mahomes.
