Patrick Mahomes, the 28-year-old NFL quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion, revealed an interesting fact about his game-day routine during a recent appearance on Peyton and Eli Manning’s “Manningcast” show. He admitted to wearing the same lucky pair of underwear for every game since his rookie season. Yes, you read that right! Mahomes has been wearing the same underwear for over 100 NFL games, and he only occasionally washes them.
While this might sound bizarre to some, Mahomes explained the origin of this superstition. “First, my wife Brittany got them for me. So I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them,” Mahomes said during the interview. He also attributed the lucky streak of his career to these red underwear, stating, “At the same time, I threw them on that first season, we had a pretty good season that season. I only wear ’em for game day though, so they’re not too worn down.”
And it seems like Mahomes might be onto something with this tradition. The Chiefs had a phenomenal 12-4 season in 2018, with Mahomes earning the league MVP title at just 23 years old. Since then, the Chiefs have gone on to win 2 Super Bowls and have been consistently successful in the NFL.
When asked if he washes the underwear, Mahomes confessed, “I wash ’em every once in a while at least. If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash ’em. I gotta keep it rollin’.” It seems like superstition and winning streaks go hand in hand for Mahomes.
Despite his massive $503 million contract and numerous endorsements, Mahomes firmly believes in keeping the superstition alive as long as it contributes to winning football games. And with the Chiefs’ track record of success in recent years, it’s hard to argue with his game-day undies tradition.
Eli Manning couldn’t resist poking fun at Mahomes, saying, “I love a good superstition, but couldn’t you just do something like eat the same pregame meal? Did it have to be the red underwear?” While Eli may have a point, it’s clear that Mahomes is sticking to his winning formula.
As for the cleanliness of the underwear, Mahomes’ response was, “Ehhh, sometimes.” It seems like Mahomes is not willing to take any chances when the team is on a hot streak.
Ultimately, whether it’s superstition or simply a lucky charm, Mahomes is committed to continuing the tradition as long as it contributes to his team’s success. And given the Chiefs’ impressive track record, it’s safe to say that Mahomes and his lucky red underwear aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
So, the next time you see Mahomes take the field for a game, just remember that there’s a good chance he’s wearing those same lucky red undies that have been a part of his game-day ritual for years. Superstition or not, it’s certainly working for him and the Chiefs.
