California-based startup Pebble is set to launch its first product, an electric travel trailer called the Flow, at the 2023 Los Angeles auto show next month. This 25-foot trailer, similar to the L1 from competitor Lightship and the eStream from Airstream, features its own battery and drive system. The purpose of this system is to provide assistance to the towing vehicle, ultimately boosting its range by conserving fuel. This is particularly important for electric vehicles (EVs) that may have limited range and require additional support when towing heavy loads.
The Flow’s drive system can also be used remotely to maneuver the trailer in and out of tight spaces, as well as during the hitching process. Pebble has developed a unique hitching feature called the Magic Hitch, which automatically positions the trailer and attaches it to the tow vehicle. However, it should be noted that the tow vehicle must have a minimum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds to handle the Flow.
Equipped with a 45-kWh battery, Pebble claims that the Flow can power all of the trailer’s appliances. The combination of solar panels, providing 1 kW of charging, and regenerative braking allows the Flow to function off the grid for up to seven days. This makes it an ideal option for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy extended stays in remote areas without access to traditional electrical hookups.
In terms of convenience, the Pebble Flow offers several features to enhance the camping experience. The InstaCamp feature, activated at the push of a button, quickly deploys or retracts the awning, stairs, lights, and auto-leveling stabilizers to set up or pack up the campsite. The trailer also includes a fully equipped kitchen with a microwave and fridge, compatibility with Starlink internet connectivity, sleeping capacity for four, and a dedicated app that allows users to control various features, including the climate system.
Despite its impressive features, the Pebble Flow does come with a premium price tag. It is priced to start at $109,000, but customers can opt for the Magic Pack, which includes a more powerful drive system, remote control capabilities, and the Magic Hitch feature for an additional cost. This brings the starting price up to $125,000. However, the company does not expect to begin deliveries until late 2024.
The Pebble Flow represents an innovative solution for those seeking a sustainable and convenient camping experience. With its electric drive system, off-grid capabilities, and advanced features like remote control and automatic hitching, it offers a high level of convenience and versatility. By targeting the EV market specifically, Pebble is addressing a growing need for trailers that can effectively support these vehicles during towing, ensuring a seamless and efficient travel experience.
As the market for electric vehicles continues to expand, the demand for supporting infrastructure, including charging stations and compatible accessories like the Pebble Flow, will also grow. With its debut at the Los Angeles auto show, Pebble is positioning itself as a key player in this emerging segment. By combining cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and convenience, the Flow has the potential to revolutionize the way people approach camping and outdoor adventures with their electric vehicles.
