Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s premier comic and gaming convention, has launched the poster and festival trailer for its 57th edition, scheduled to take place from November 1-5, 2023. This year’s festival theme, “Together,” focuses on diversity and inclusion, with rainbow color additions to the Lucca logo.
The poster for the 2023 festival was designed by Israeli artists, Asaf Hanuka and Tomer Hanuka. Both brothers have an impressive portfolio, including their work on the concept art for the Oscar-nominated animated documentary “Waltz With Bashir” in 2008. They have also collaborated on various graphic novels, such as “The Divine” by Boaz Lavie.
The design of the Lucca poster combines Western and Eastern traditions, featuring an oriental dragon descending from the sky over Lucca’s historic city. According to Emanuele Vietina, the festival director, the image represents the essence of “Together” in a unique and evocative way. It showcases the multiple tribes that make up the festival’s community and highlights the transformative power of coming together.
In addition to the poster unveiling, Lucca Comics & Games announced that this year’s event will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Lucca Games, the festival’s gaming sidebar. Joe Manganiello, a regular at the festival, will return as the international ambassador for Lucca Games. Manganiello, best known for his roles in “True Blood” and “Magic Mike,” is currently working on a Dungeons and Dragons documentary in collaboration with games publisher Wizards of the Coast. Peter Adkison, the creator of Wizards of the Coast, will also attend the festival to present the Italian premiere of the documentary “Igniting the Spark: The Story of Magic: The Gathering,” which delves into the history of the popular trading card game.
Several other notable guests are expected to attend the festival as well. Garth Ennis, the writer of “The Boys,” Manga artist Naoki Urasawa, American graphic novelist Craig Thompson, Marvel cartoonist Jim Lee, and Rand Miller, co-creator of the iconic video game “Myst,” will all be present.
As fans eagerly await the festival, the newly released poster gives them a glimpse into what to expect. The captivating artwork showcases the Hanuka Brothers’ talent and captures the spirit of togetherness that defines the festival’s theme.
