Qualcomm recently introduced its latest mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, which is targeted towards budget-friendly smartphones. This new chipset brings several improvements that will enhance the performance of lower-tier smartphones. One of the main highlights of the platform is its focus on delivering excellent battery life, allowing for “all-day use” according to Qualcomm.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 features the proprietary Qualcomm Kryo CPU, which offers peak speeds of up to 2.2 GHz. This represents a slight increase in performance compared to the previous generation of Snapdragon chips. Additionally, Qualcomm has integrated quick-charging technology into the chipset, enabling users to achieve a 50 percent charge in just 15 minutes when plugged in.
In terms of display capabilities, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 supports modern FHD+ displays with the ability to achieve frame rates of up to 120fps. This means that users can enjoy smoother and more visually appealing graphics on their smartphones. The chipset also offers significant improvements to the camera system, including electronic image stabilization, faster autofocus, enhanced blur reduction, and more. It even incorporates multi-camera temporal filtering (MCTF) for reducing noise in videos.
As anticipated in a product introduced in 2023, artificial intelligence (AI) is a key focus of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2. This is particularly evident in the camera enhancements, which leverage AI-based algorithms for lighting adjustments in low-light environments. Additionally, the chipset includes an AI-enhanced background noise removal tool, ensuring that users can capture high-quality photos and videos in any setting.
Connectivity is also a key aspect of the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, thanks to its proprietary X61 5G Modern-RF system. Qualcomm promises “blazing-fast speeds” and expanded network and frequency support, enabling users to experience faster and more reliable connections. While these chips are not yet available in budget-friendly smartphones, OEM brands like Redmi and vivo have already committed to incorporating the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 into their upcoming models.
Looking forward, Qualcomm expects the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 to start appearing in smartphones later this year. As more manufacturers adopt this chipset, users can anticipate more affordable devices with improved performance, longer battery life, better camera capabilities, and faster connectivity. With the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, Qualcomm aims to elevate the user experience in lower-tier smartphones and bridge the gap between budget-friendly devices and their high-end counterparts.
