The first trailer for the new anime series “Blue Eye Samurai” by Michael Green and Amber Noizumi promises an epic and action-packed journey led by a mixed-race swordmaster. The trailer, which was first shown during the streamer’s inaugural Drop 01 event, provides a deeper look into the life of the show’s protagonist, Mizu, as she seeks revenge on the white man who took her mother and turned her into a “monster.”
Noizumi, who is half-Japanese, revealed that the concept for the series came from her own experiences with her daughter’s racial identity. She questioned why she was so excited about her daughter having blue eyes and why she felt proud to have a child who looked more white. Noizumi explained that during Japan’s Edo period, which began in the 17th century, it would have been illegal and undesirable to look white.
Set in 17th Century Edo-period Japan, Mizu is a mixed-race samurai who is referred to as a blue-eyed monster and views herself as a “creature of shame.” Living in disguise, Mizu embarks on a mission to kill four men, including one who may be her father, in a society where revenge is a luxury for men and women must be practical. With no time for weakness or distractions like friendship, love, or patience, Mizu is determined to eliminate anyone who stands in her way.
The teaser trailer showcases intense and vivid fight sequences in various settings, from snowy plains to mountains surrounded by magma. The enemies of Mizu refuse to go down easily, emphasizing the resilience and determination required for her mission. The trailer hints at the fact that Mizu may not be the ruthless killer she appears to be but instead someone deeply hurt and angered.
Michael Green expressed the desire for the series to appeal to a wide range of audiences, stating that they want viewers to become immersed in the story and forget they are watching animation. Whether fans of “The Witcher,” animation, “Game of Thrones,” historical drama, or Quentin Tarantino movies, Green believes there is something in “Blue Eye Samurai” for everyone.
In addition to its compelling story, the series boasts an impressive voice cast, including Maya Erskine as Mizu, along with George Takei, Masi Oka, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Brenda Song, Darren Barnet, Randall Park, and Kenneth Branagh. The show aims to represent Asian and Asian-American voices by casting actors who bring authenticity to their roles.
“Blue Eye Samurai” is co-created, executive produced, and written by Amber Noizumi and Michael Green. Erwin Stoff serves as an executive producer, with Jane Wu as the supervising director and producer. The animation studio Blue Spirit brings the characters to life using a 2D/3D hybrid style inspired by traditional Japanese puppet performances known as Bunraku puppets.
Fans can look forward to the release of “Blue Eye Samurai” on Netflix on November 3rd. With its captivating storyline, stunning visuals, and diverse representation, the series promises to be a must-watch for anime and action enthusiasts alike.
