Fifty-four college graduates who were part of the foster system received an unexpected gift at their graduation celebration in late May. Ready to Succeed, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, surprised each student with a $2,000 graduation gift to help them transition into the next phase of their lives. These young graduates have defied the odds to reach this milestone, as only four percent of youth who age out of the foster system in Los Angeles County obtain a college degree.
Ready to Succeed has played a vital role in the success of these students. Through their wrap-around career and personal development program, the organization has managed to achieve an impressive success rate. Ninety percent of their scholars graduate from college within 4.5 years, and 89 percent find strong entry-level jobs in their desired fields within six months of graduation.
David Ambroz, a former foster youth and best-selling author, was the keynote speaker at Ready to Succeed’s third annual graduation celebration. He praised the organization for its passionate and effective leadership, emphasizing that they not only provide resources but also offer wrap-around support and consistent communication. This understanding of what it takes to succeed sets Ready to Succeed apart from other organizations.
Ready to Succeed’s success can be attributed to a few key pillars. First, they provide financial aid through a robust scholarship program. Many of the students they support face a shortfall of at least $5,000 each year when it comes to paying for college. The organization also prioritizes mental health and wellness services, understanding the importance of addressing these aspects for the overall well-being of the students.
However, the critical foundation of success, according to Ready to Succeed’s co-executive director Romi Lassally, lies in helping the students build networks and gain social capital. While privileged students often take these opportunities for granted, those from less privileged backgrounds often struggle to access and develop these connections. To bridge this gap, Ready to Succeed focuses on securing paid internships, arranging informational interviews, and coaching students on career and job-finding skills to boost their confidence.
Lassally explains that relationships and networks are pivotal for success, and many foster youth lack these naturally. To address this, Ready to Succeed introduced a two-day program called Camp Ready, which focuses on helping students tell their stories and take ownership of their experiences. The organization also emphasizes the importance of resume writing and actively connects students with professionals through internships and entry-level job opportunities.
Ready to Succeed started with just six students and a simple idea of leveraging existing networks to help foster youth succeed in college. Seven years later, the organization has grown to employ 19 people and serve 400 scholars and alumni. Their impact extends beyond graduation, as they continue to support alumni during their transition into the workforce.
The majority of Ready to Succeed scholars attend UC and Cal State schools, and post-graduation, they pursue careers in various industries. Graduates have secured positions at companies like Amazon, Disney, Johnson & Johnson, and Canyon Partners. Additionally, some alumni choose to pursue higher education and are working towards obtaining their PhDs. Many express a desire to give back to their community, with a significant number finding fulfilling roles in the nonprofit and public service sectors.
In terms of support, Ready to Succeed is always looking for volunteers to assist with their programs. They also encourage professionals to consider offering internships and entry-level job opportunities to their students. Even a small act, such as an informational meeting, can create a significant impact and moment of connection for these foster youth.
Lassally emphasizes that the motivation for Ready to Succeed stems from the belief that foster youth should not only overcome the hurdles to reach college but also successfully complete their education. The organization’s annual Project Dorm Room fundraiser, which raises money to provide college essentials for students, is another way to support their mission. A $750 package includes items such as sheets, blankets, pillows, bath towels, and school supplies, ensuring that students have what they need to thrive in college.
Ready to Succeed continues to make a difference in the lives of foster youth, equipping them with the resources, support, and connections they need to succeed in college and beyond. Through their holistic approach, they are breaking down barriers and empowering these students to build bright futures for themselves.
