Adult Swim is bringing back the highly popular animated series, Rick and Morty, for its seventh season. The network has promised that the new episodes will “raise the bar” following the departure of co-creator Justin Roiland. The Emmy-winning sci-fi comedy is set to return on Sunday, October 15 at 11 p.m. and will consist of 10 episodes, similar to previous seasons.
Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, stating, “Thanks to the talent of the entire show team, we can all enjoy 10 new episodes that yet again raise the bar for comedy and animation. This season proves that the geniuses at work on Rick and Morty are just getting started.”
The news of the seventh season follows Roiland’s departure from the show earlier this year. In January, he was charged with felony domestic abuse in Orange County, California and subsequently lost his lucrative overall deal with Adult Swim. There were also allegations of abusive direct messages to a fan and workplace behavior issues. However, the criminal charges were dropped in March.
In light of Roiland’s absence, Adult Swim has been on the lookout for new voice actors to portray the titular characters of Rick and Morty. Despite the recasting, the network reassures fans that the characters themselves will remain unchanged. So far, no new cast members have been announced. However, it has been revealed that Dan Stevens has been chosen as the lead for another animated series created by Roiland called Solar Opposites, which will be airing on Hulu.
An official description for the seventh season of Rick and Morty teases the audience with new storylines, stating, “Rick and Morty are back and sounding more like themselves than ever! It’s season seven, and the possibilities are endless: what’s up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to the high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. Rick and Morty, 100 years! Or at least until season 10!”
The network proudly points out that Rick and Morty has been the top comedy across all of cable during seasons three, four, five, and six. The show reached over 19 million viewers on linear broadcast in 2022 and continues to be a top series on the streaming service Max. Rick and Morty has already won two Emmys for outstanding animated program and is currently nominated for a third.
Fans of the series can look forward to the return of Rick and Morty in October, with the promise of more hilarious and mind-bending adventures. Adult Swim assures viewers that this new season will continue to push boundaries and deliver the unique blend of comedy and animation that has made the show a tremendous success.
