Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently visited Brazil as part of his tour of Latin America. He met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio ‘Lula’ da Silva and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to discuss energy and economic cooperation between countries of the region. Lavrov stressed the importance of building a “multipolar” world, which takes into account different countries, not just a few, and rejects US domination of the international arena. Vieira also rejected the US sanctions enacted against Russia, stating that Brazil was against unilateral sanctions because they have negative impacts on economies around the world. Lavrov’s tour also includes visits to Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. In Cuba, Lavrov is expected to sign agreements related to energy and transport cooperation, while in Venezuela and Nicaragua, the focus will be on strengthening political ties between the countries. The tour is part of Russia’s effort to strengthen its ties with Latin America, which it sees as a strategic partner in the global arena.
